Hull City have been caught up in Sheffield Wednesday’s extensive financial woes, which have seen the Owls struggling to pay staff over the past few months amid an increasingly desperate situation, and now the Tigers have emerged as one of their football creditors.
City, like Wednesday, have fallen foul of the EFL’s strict financial governance in recent weeks, having been landed with a couple of transfer embargoes and then a three-window fee restriction, which the Tigers have appealed.
While the situation at the MKM Stadium is far from ideal, matters nearly 70 miles away in the Steel City are particularly bleak, with no fewer than three different embargoes slapped on the Owls’ head, as well as a three-window fee restriction.
To make matters worse for Wednesday, it’s understood that they still owe City a five-figure sum from the transfer of former League One promotion winner Mallik Wilks, which has not yet been settled.
Wilks, who joined the Owls from City in August 2022, having scored 30 goals in 91 appearances for the Tigers, went on to play 42 games for Wednesday, scoring just three goals before calling time on his spell in S6 after his contract was not renewed this summer.
Earlier this week, Wilks opted to quit English football and join Turkish second-division outfit Pendikspor along with former Peterborough United and Rotherham United forward Jonson Clarke-Harris.
Wednesday find themselves in an absolute crisis due to the car crash ownership under Dejphon Chansiri, but hope remains amongst their supporters that their disastrous spell under the Thai businessman is coming to an end.
