Hot days are made for a visit to the beach – but be sure to pack plenty of sun cream with you!

With the Met Office predicting Hull will reach 24 degrees tomorrow and with hot weather anticipated for the rest of the week, plenty of people will be heading to the coastline to enjoy some sea and sand. But it pays to plan ahead, and every beach in our area offers something a little bit different, so be sure to do your research before heading out on your day-trip.

Hull Live took a look at some beaches in the area that could provide solace and outdoor fun for your family during the hot spell. If you are heading out to the beach, ensure you pack plenty of sunscreen and water to protect yourself from the UV rays.

Mappleton Beach: Fossil hunting

This wide sandy beach located in front of the village of the same name can be found about half-an-hour from the centre of Hull. Situated on the North Sea coastline, this section is known as Holderness and is situated around three miles (five km) south of the seaside resort of Hornsea.

The beach area is lacking in traditional seaside attractions but there are nearby tea rooms and the added bonus of free car parking at the top of the cliffs. The location was a former MoD bombing range so it is advisable that if you do see any un-exploded ordnance or metal objects to give those a wide berth and contact authorities.

There is no lifeguard service on the beach and visitors are also warned to be careful of the coastline which is home to eroding cliffs.

The beach is popular with dog walkers and the furry friends are welcome on its sands. Remember to keep your eyes peeled as there’s plenty of fossils to be spotted on this beach!

Barmston Beach: Tranquillity

Ten miles north of Hornsea is Barmston beach. The beach is located in a quieter area of the East Yorkshire coastline and features a nearby café where you can purchase refreshments.

Barmston beach doesn’t have many facilities, but this means it is normally a less visited option than some of the more popular choices in the area. There is a local holiday park close by that has an outdoor swimming pool, a restaurant and a children’s play area but most facilites are located in nearby villages such as Barmston or Fraisthorpe.

Fraisthorpe Beach: ‘Miles and miles’ of sand

Located not far from Barmston, Fraisthorpe Beach is known for its ‘miles and miles’ of sand. It forms part of Bridlington Bay and while many people may be tempted to jump into the sea to cool down, there is no lifeguard service located there.

Kite-surfing is also prevalent due to the area’s wide expanse of sand.

There are some stunning views from nearby cliffs and cliff-top scenery to admire. Again, be careful if you are visiting areas of height in the region and beware of cliff erosion.

Bridlington South Beach: Great for kids

Situated to the south of Bridlington Spa and Bridlington Harbour, on the East Riding coast, this beach features just over a mile of sand and has the iconic Princess Mary Promenade as a beautiful backdrop.

The promenade can be accessed via a slipway and features an array of shops and cafés. A large amount of parking is available within the town which also has public toilets and a train station.

Bridlington South also has a large paddling pool next to the Princess Mary Promenade chalets on the South Promenade, which is perfect for children. They must, however, be supervised at all times.

Cleethorpes Beach: Traditional seaside experience

South of Hull lies Cleethorpes Beach featuring a long stretch of picturesque coastline and offering a traditional British seaside experience. It presents beachgoers with a number of activities including sitting in the sun, or paddling in the waters off the coast. You can also visit the arcades or do something more active and go kite surfing or stand up paddle-boarding.
