Hull KR boss Willie Peters says Tom Davies has even exceeded his own high expectations since joining from Catalans Dragons. The ex-England winger is set to chalk up his 200th career appearance against Leigh Leopards today.
He’s been one of the Robins’ most consistent players this term having arrived over the winter from Perpignan. Davies has scored 17 tries in just 20 appearances, form which has seen many people call for him to be called back up to the international scene for the Ashes.
The former Wigan Warriors star has long been a Super League class act. But asked if he was every bit the player he thought he’d be when he signed him or potentially even more, Peters replied: “He’s probably been more.
“I knew what we were going to get with Tom; my first conversation with him, I knew he wasn’t just a good player, he was a good person and a high-energy person.
“He is a character of the team. He has been great for us. He does a lot of the tough stuff, his yardage carries, he’s a pleasure to coach and he is good to have around the group so he’s been really important to us this year and he will be going forward.”
Only Liam Marshall and Lewis Martin have made more than his 305 carries in Super League while only Jai Field and Robins team-mate Mikey Lewis better his 18 clean breaks.
Davies’ 2,275m is the fifth best in the competition while 13 of his tries have come in Super League, including eight in the last six games alone.
On his career stats, he made 62 of his 199 appearances so far for Wigan between 2017 and 2019. That included a try-scoring appearance in their 2018 Grand Final win. During that time, Davies also spent four games on dual-registration with Swinton Lions.
He moved to France in 2020, going on to make 109 appearances for Les Dracs, including two Grand Finals. Davies played for England Knights twice in 2018 before making two England appearances including a try-scoring debut against France in 2021.
