People in Hull can take a trip back to the decade of ‘glam and gloom’ at a free new 1970s exhibition.

Exploring the highs and lows of the era from strikes and power cuts to rising standards of living, holidaying on the Costa del Sol, glam rock and some of the greatest British TV of all time, the period has been brought to life at the Streetlife Museum.

Glam and Gloom: 1970s Britain features dozens of items from the decade including TV and music memorabilia, fashion, toys and games. It also includes people’s memories of the 1970s, with photos from members of the public featuring in a digital display after a recent appeal made by the museum for people to send in their snaps.

Created by curator Dr Gerardine Mulcahy-Parker, the exhibition chronicles life in 1970s Hull alongside the national stories of the decade.

Councillor Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure at Hull City Council, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the fantastic contributions we’ve had from our residents to this brilliant exhibition.

“Their memories really do capture life in the city during the 1970s, offering a real personal touch. I look forward to seeing visitor reaction to this one – spotting familiar faces along the way!”

Glam and Gloom: 1970s Britain is on display now at the Streetlife Museum until August 31. Entry is free.
