Cottingham Parish Council has announced it is holding a public consultation over the future of the BMX track at King George V Playing Fields.
The BMX track, which was installed in 2008, was taken over by the local parish council in recent years. It has said that, amid concerns surrounding the use of the track and issue of antisocial behaviour on the site, a consultation is to be launched to assess the views of local residents regarding the track’s future.
A meeting is now set to take place in the Darby and Joan Hall, in Finkle Street, at 7.15pm on Thursday, July 10.
A decision on the future of the BMX track is not expected to be made until later in the year, with the options being to either keep and develop the track, or have it return to grassland.
Councillor Julia Marten, Chair of the Parish Council, said “We haven’t made any decision yet – we want to know how well the track is used, whether local youngsters want to keep it and increase usage and whether there is a group of people that would be willing to help manage it.
“As well as the consultation meeting we will be issuing a survey in the next couple of weeks to ensure that everyone gets a chance to have their say.”
Support has been shown for the BMX track on social media, with a public Facebook group being used to garner support for the track. Among those offering support is East Riding ward councillor Carolyn Cantrell who represents Cottingham South. The Labour Party councillor has said: “As a villager, parent and local councillor, I fully support such facilities for our village children.
“These young people, along with their parents and supporters, are really passionate about the site and are keen to see the area improved and utilised by future generations.”
