An independent gift shop in Hull will close with all its stock to be auctioned off, it has announced.
Hares & Graces in King Edward Street has been selling gifts in Hull City Centre for more than 10 years, first operating from the top floor of Princes Quay when it opened in 2015.
The family behind Hares & Graces previously owned another local business called Perfume Heaven. Unfortunately, they said they have had to make a “tough decision” to close Hares & Graces amid rising costs.
In a statement posted on the Hares & Graces Facebook page, the owners said: “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the immediate closure of Hares & Graces.
“It’s not easy choosing to close a shop after an amazing 10 years, give up everything you’ve ever known, and in the same blink of eye affect the lives of the amazing team who worked alongside you.
“I think people sometimes don’t realise fully what goes on behind closed doors of a business, that it consumes every waking moment of your life, takes away time from loved ones, and is impacted by decisions outside of your control.
“So after rising costs and people spending less, some tough decisions had to made in the best interest of not only the company, but for ourselves and our families and to make the most of the time we are given, and this was one of the toughest of all.
“So firstly we’d like to thank the staff and wish them the very best for their future, and to all our customers who helped us to enjoy doing what we loved so much. We really will miss you all.
“The stock and contents of our shop are going to auction at Gilbert Baitson Auctioneers so please do have a look. Thank you again for everything, and we’re sorry to leave you with another empty shop on the high street.”
In a message of support, one customer said: “I’m so very sorry to hear this however I completely understand and wish you all the very best in whatever your future plans are.”
A second said: “That’s sad a family business lovely people I’m sure they will be missed.” Someone else commented: “Really sad. More of Hull disappearing.”
Gilbert Baitson Auctioneers said a catalogue of items would be posted on its website.
