Here’s a run down of some of the planning applications that have recently been submitted to Hull City Council, which include plans to alter the exterior of Hull’s BBC building.

BBC building alterations

An application has been submitted to the council regarding the Queen’s Court building, which houses Hull’s BBC studios and over 100 residential units. The application details plans to remove and replace the existing metal cladding panels and fascia balconies. Before and after elevations submitted to the council suggest there will not be any noticeable visual changes following the work. In 2021, the cladding on the building was found to be unsafe and posing a fire risk.

Planning documents say the nine-storey building, that overlooks Queen’s Gardens, houses approximately of 200-250 residents within 115 residential units, and is the place of work to the BBC employees.

Submitted documents state that a number of measures have already been put in place at the building. These include new evacuation procedures established by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, which have been communicated to all residents. Other measures include a 24-hour waking watch at the site, ensuring the building is patrolled at all times by two trained marshals. Residents have also been told they must not smoke on balconies.

Demolition of river front buildings

An application has been launched by Allam Developments Ltd for the demolition of 15 Lime Street. The application seeks to allow the area to be used as a carpark and yard area for 10-12 Lime Street. The plans for the site, which is on the eastern bank of the River Hull, near the North Bridge, state: “Aspects of the proposal will result in a positive visual impact as currently the site is in need of upgrading and subsequent maintenance.”

Conversion of former pub

The council has also received plans for the conversion of the former Cumberland Arms Public House, on Cumberland Street. The plans seek to convert the vacant pub into a mix of commercial and residential spaces. The plans state the ground floor would consist of two office units and a cafe, whilst the first floor would become a one-bedroom residential flat. Plans also include exterior works including the establishment of four car parking bays and an outdoor seating area for cafe customers.
