Willie Peters lamented Hull KR’s inability to convert opportunities into points after a rare defeat at the hands of Leeds Rhinos.
Rovers suffered just their second defeat of the year as Leeds fought back to win 14-8 after the Robins had opened up an 8-0 lead.
But crucially, they could not make the most of big chances at the start and end of the half, with breaks from Joe Burgess and Kelepi Tanginoa ending with the ball going to ground.
Tom Davies had a try ruled out for a forward pass too and the Robins ultimately paid the price as a wonder try for Lachie Miller saw the visitors clinch it.
“I thought we had a lot of opportunity at the start,” he said. “We score and it could have been different. I was really happy with what we did in the first half other than our execution, and that hurt us.
“We come out slow in the second half, they came out and got field possession, we had some ill-discipline and they came over the top of us at the back end.
“You can’t afford to do that, we’ve done it in the past, the Grand Final was similar, you might only get one or two opportunities. Putting yourself in a good position doesn’t mean you’ll win the game, but you’ve got a better chance.”
Peters added: “Leeds were outstanding. They deserved it, there’s no doubt about that. I’m not taking anything away from them. I’m looking at what we could have controlled and that was execution of a couple of nice tries. But ultimately Leeds were the better side and they won.”
The loss of Mikey Lewis to a failed HIA was a hammer blow for Rovers and one Peters was disappointed with.
“I don’t want to say too much on it,” he said. “I’ll have a look at it. There’s probably a bit of learning there. I don’t think it was too bad because he’s fine.”
