Sporting director Jared Dublin has opened up on Hull City’s transfer interest in Jonjo Shelvey. The former Liverpool and Newcastle United midfielder is currently training with the Tigers, having been released by Burnley at the end of the 2024/25 season.
Shelvey, who had spells in Turkey with Çaykur Rizespor and Eyüpspor before returning to England in the New Year, has been given the opportunity to train with City to build up his fitness ahead of the new campaign. The 33-year-old only played four times for the Clarets in the second half of last season as Scott Parker’s side secured automatic promotion.
Dublin told the media: “We are looking to add experience into the group (this summer). We want Sergej (Jakirovic) to have a look at as many players as possible to see who sees fitting into his style of football in the Championship next season.
“Jonjo’s CV speaks for itself. Whether that turns into something permanent or not, time will tell.
“But the opportunity to bring in someone with his track record, calibre and passing quality to come into train is not something we were going to turn down. The last time I had something similar was with David McGoldrick at Sheffield United and he turned out pretty well.
“We’ll see what happens over time (with Shelvey). At this moment he’s training and we’ll evaluate from there.”
City remain hopeful of signing striker Oliver McBurnie on a free transfer. The 29-year-old, who finished last season in Spain with Las Palmas, is also reportedly attracting interest from former club Swansea City
“I’d probably say the party line that it’s a secret,” said Dublin. “He [McBurnie] is a player I know very well personally from my time at Sheffield United.
“Is that an area we’re trying to strengthen? Yes. He’s a good player. He’s been promoted out of this division before which is the ambition of this club in the long term. I would understand why there would be interest from our side.
“He’s a player who would attract interest domestically and abroad, of course, with his profile. He’s really experienced.
City are closing in on a deal for Aston Villa forward Louie Barry. Reports in The Athletic have suggested City have agreed a £3.5m deal to sign the talented attacker from the Premier League side. Barry spent the second half of last season on loan at City but injuries limited him to just four appearances.
“I like Louie Barry; he likes us,” said owner Acun Ilicali. “We had a good conversation with him three days ago. I’m personally involved in this transfer because of my relationship with Monchi (head of football operations at Villa) and Mr Sawiris (Villa owner).”
