Hull KR head coach Willie Peters insists “nothing changes for us” despite his side opening up a four-point lead over Wigan Warriors at the top of the Super League table.
Rovers have claimed 14 wins from 15 games this season, with their only defeat coming against the reigning champions in April. They’ve brushed off any fears of a Challenge Cup hangover with emphatic back-to-back wins, while Wigan recently stumbled with a shock defeat to Wakefield Trinity.
The result extended Rovers’ lead at the summit, but Peters is keeping his players grounded ahead of this Friday’s clash with Daryl Powell’s Wakefield at Sewell Group Craven Park.
“There’s a lot of rugby to be played, so nothing changes for us,” the Aussie coach said.
“We need to prepare like we do, we have a process around how we prepare each week and the most important game for us is Friday night against Wakefield, who obviously had a great win against Wigan and that’s our priority.”
In their first season back in the top-flight, Wakefield have emerged as genuine play-off contenders after 15 rounds of action. They are currently seventh on the table, just one point behind Hull FC.
Peters says he isn’t surprised by Wakefield’s rapid rise and recalls how his team had to battle for a narrow 14-12 win against them in February at the DIY Kitchens Stadium.
“They’re a class team,” Peters said. “They’ve shown that from the start of the year. I said in round two that they’re a very good team, and they’ve shown that.
“They worked hard in pre-season, you can see that. They’re a close-knit group, you can see that, and Daryl is doing a great job with them.
“They’re in and around that six for a reason, and they’ll be pushing that six at the end of the year.
“I’ve only got positive things to say, so we’ve got to make sure we prepare right to keep our form and momentum going on Friday.”
