A Hull woman has been described as “inspiring” for remaining calm and helping a young man who suffered serious injuries in a collision.

Mandy Ehlert, 60, said “mum instincts” took over when she came upon the scene in Selby Street at round 11:15am on April 30. Humberside Police said a Mercedes “allegedly mounted the footpath, colliding with a pedestrian and brick wall”.

The 22-year-old man was awake throughout the ordeal, mum-of-three Mandy told Hull Live. She said: “He got run over and the car took him through a brick wall. I just sat and talked to him.”

Mandy described the severity of his injuries and said: “His foot was facing the wrong way. I didn’t actually see the accident, I just heard it.”

“I was talking to him and trying to help him calm his breathing. It is something I’d want somebody to do for my child. He stayed conscious throughout.”

“I don’t have medical training other than a first aid I did for a job, but that’s pretty much it. It was more a case of ‘mum instincts’ kicked in.” Mandy added: “I don’t think I did anything special.”

Mandy received a Commendation Certificate from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service’s Chief Fire Officer Phil Shillito for her actions. It recognises the compassion and support she showed at the scene of the collision in Selby Street.

Chief Fire Officer, Phil Shillito praised her actions: “Mandy’s response in such a harrowing situation is nothing short of inspiring. Her simple but powerful act of humanity made a real difference to someone in their darkest moment.

“Our firefighters see first-hand how powerful kindness can be during an emergency. Mandy’s response reminds us that compassion doesn’t require a uniform, it just takes a willing heart. It is an honour to recognise her today.”
