Robins boss Willie Peters has hailed Hull KR – for helping get his mum and dad back together from 10,500 miles away!
The Aussie’s parents were unable to get across to the UK for last weekend’s big Challenge Cup final moment. Peters saw his side become the first Rovers team in 40 years to win a major trophy and only the second to ever lift the Cup after the iconic 1980 vintage.
It was the highlight so far of his blossoming career which has seen him already make three major finals in less than three seasons at the East Yorkshire club. But on whether his parents had got over to see it, Peters explained: “Actually, funny enough, my parents are separated.
“But they watched the game together, which was nice. So it’s amazing what Hull KR rugby league team can do: they can unite families and bring families back together!
“We had a bit of a joke around it, but it was really nice to see my mum and dad and my sisters watching the game together. They went down to his place. Dad’s just moved into a new place down the South Coast. And mum and my sisters went down there and watched it all together. So it was nice.”
Asked if it was an emotional conversation when he did get to speak to them after KR’s glorious triumph, Peters added: “Yeah, look it was. I think the emotion was probably more around the players and my family over here. Naturally it was beautiful and nice to speak to them.
“But I took a moment the next morning to thank my boys and my wife for everything that they’ve gone through and sacrificed to come over. And that was emotional for me because, as I said, they’ve sacrificed a hell of a lot to help me chase my dream of doing what we’ve just done. But naturally with the players it was a special time.”
And Peters, now preparing his side for Friday’s Super League clash with Catalans, did have some Aussie pals there with him to witness the drama unfold.
“I had a very close mate that came over with his wife, which was awesome,” said Peters, who also gave an update on Tyrone May’s future.
“They were here for literally a couple of days. They’ve gone to Italy for a couple days now and so it was just an in-and-out trip for them. It was great to have them here.”
