A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms over London has been issued by the Met Office for the day of the rugby league Challenge Cup final in the capital.
The warning is active from 9am to 6pm on Saturday, June 7, just as many thousands of Hull Kingston Rovers supporters will be heading for, and spectating at the memory-making match with Warrington Wolves, at Wembley. Forecasters have predicted heavy showers and thunderstorms that “may lead to some disruption to transport and infrastructure” for London and south-east England, along with large swathes of eastern England, Wiltshire, Wales, East and West Midlands.
In explaining what was to be expected when a yellow thunderstorm warning is issued, the Met Office said: “There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus. Delays to train services are possible.”
Some damage to buildings and structures from lightning strikes was also a possibility. “Some short-term loss of power and other services is likely,” it said.
“10-15mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, whilst some places could see 30-40mm of rain over several hours from successive showers and thunderstorms. Frequent lightning, hail and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards.
“Frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected for much of Saturday before fading from the west during the mid to late afternoon.”
The situation at Wembley itself does not offer hope of staying dry for the players or for some of the spectators in the stands. The stadium does have a roof but it does not cover the pitch.
Wembley’s website includes a picture of the roof in its “fully closed” position. It says: “As you can see, it does not cover the pitch and if rain is falling at an angle, some guests in Level 1 seating may get wet.
“This is how Wembley Stadium has been designed as it allows for the playing surface to receive maximum sunlight. Wembley Stadium does not move the sliding roof while visitors are in the stadium.”
