A Ryanair rule could see passengers hit with £55 fees, and it’s not to do with oversized baggage. The budget airline is known for its no-frills approach, with a tendency to charge extra for things like luggage and selecting your own seats.

Currently passengers on a basic fare can only take one small personal bag as hand luggage, and if this doesn’t fit the dimensions, it will have to go in the hold – at an extra cost. While many people are aware of this rule, there’s another Ryanair regulation that could see you charged extra.

If you’re flying with Ryanair you’ll usually need to check in online and either print out your boarding pass, or download it to your smartphone. The only exception to this is if you’re travelling on a Plus or Flexi Plus ticket, with these passengers also able to check in at the airport for free.

You can check in online from 60 days before your flight is due to takeoff if you’ve paid for a seat, or 24 hours before departure if you’re happy to be allocated a free seat. Regardless of your seat choices, online check-in closes two hours before the flight is due to depart.

After checking in online you’ll receive your boarding passes, and you’ll need to download a copy through the Ryanair app, or print it out. If you don’t have a Plus or Flexi Plus ticket and you don’t check in online more than two hours before departure, you’ll be charged an airport check-in fee – £55 or euros.

To avoid the fee make sure you have a usable boarding pass before you set off for the airport.
