He has nothing but affection to offer – yet potential families continue to pass him by. Sweet Angelo, a mixed breed, has found sanctuary at Oakwood Dog Rescue in Hull, where staff are determined to secure him a fresh start.

The 10-month-old pup began life in a Romanian kill shelter – experiencing human compassion for the first time only when the Oakwood team intervened.

A spokesperson explained: “Several months ago, we had a plea from a volunteer rescuer in Romania stating that there were 13 extremely vulnerable puppies in the shelter that were going to struggle to make it through their harsh winter with minimal shelter and minimal food.

“We agreed to take the two most vulnerable which was Angelo and his very skinny friend Lewis, who has now been adopted.”

Given that Angelo has never experienced home life, he requires a patient owner willing to support him through the adjustment period whilst continuing his fundamental training.

The spokesperson continued: “Angelo does enjoy playing with other dogs but unfortunately has some guarding traits that have started to escalate.

“He will guard food, toys, bedding, anything he doesn’t want the other dog near and he will chase them off aggressively / start a fight.

“For this reason, we can not allow Angelo to live in a home with a resident dog. He could have dog friends though for play dates / walks.

“Angelo is untested with cats but from his behaviour with other dogs, we are not looking to cat test him.”

One Facebook user couldn’t hide their affection in a comment on the rehoming appeals, saying: “I want to kiss that nose. He’s just so darn cute.”

Another added their voice to the chorus of admiration: “I love his little face and smile.”

A third chimed in with: “He’s gorgeous. I hope he finds his forever home soon.”

And yet another was charmed by the dog’s expression: “Look at his wee smile.”

Since 2009, Oakwood Dog Rescue has dedicated itself to finding new homes for dogs in dire straits, focusing particularly on those enduring harsh conditions in Romania.

The rescue’s ethos is encapsulated in their statement: “The rescue helps all dogs they can, of any breed, where they come from in the world or age including those with special needs or behaviour issues.”

They aim to rehabilitate these dogs and find them loving homes where they can enjoy a life filled with happiness and care.

Oakwood Dog Rescue believes that “Great things can be achieved with the help of our many generous supporters working together towards a common goal, creating more happiness for every dog that ends up at Oakwood Dog Rescue.”
