Hull City will not be signing free agent Jonjo Shelvey after the club opted against bringing in the experienced former Liverpool and Nottingham Forest midfielder, Hull Live understands.
Shelvey has spent the first half of pre-season training with the Tigers and was part of the club’s training camp in Turkey earlier this month, playing in wins over Istanbulspor and Kasimpasa as he looked to try and secure a contract at the MKM Stadium.
Despite having a hand in Tyrell Sellars-Fleming’s winning goal against Shota Arveladze’s side last Saturday in Istanbul, City have made the decision not to pursue a deal for the 33-year-old midfielder.
Shelvey was not in the squad as City were 1-0 winners at Stockport County on Saturday afternoon as Sergej Jakirovic’s side took another step towards the big kick-off at Coventry City in less than two weeks’ time, courtesy of Mason Burstow’s fine header from Ryan Giles’ pinpoint cross.
It’s believed the experienced campaigner was not considered for a first-team start, and given the transfer restrictions the club is operating under, they opted against offering him a deal and will instead pursue other options.
City remain worryingly short in the middle of the park ahead of the season opener at the CBS Arena, but hope to bring in John Lundstram from Trabzonspor, while the Tigers have other midfield targets.
Eliot Matazo is expected back around Christmastime as he continues his recovery from an ACL injury, while the club have not given up hope of signing Ecuador starlet Oscar Zambrano, though there is time to conclude that deal, given he cannot play again until early November.
