Louie Barry says the relationship he built up with Ruben Selles during their brief spell together at Hull City was key in him joining Sheffield United. Barry spent the second half of the season on loan at City under Selles’ tutelage, with the Spaniard opting to sign the former Barcelona youngster instead of Sorba Thomas back in January.
Unfortunately, for Barry, Selles and City, the Sutton Coldfield-born ace suffered a serious knee injury in his fourth game at Sunderland, which ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign.
Late last month, City agreed a £3.5m fee with Aston Villa to sign Barry permanently, only to see that deal collapse after the EFL imposed sanctions on the Tigers. Now, the Blades have moved to snap him on loan for the season, adding insult to injury for Tigers fans who had hoped to see him back at the MKM Stadium.
“The first time I had conversations about it, I just couldn’t wait to come here. The season is three weeks away, and I know we have a couple of friendlies before, but I am just buzzing to get started,” Barry said after arriving at Bramall Lane.
“Yeah, definitely [Selles was important in him joining the Blades]. I only had a short spell, unfortunately, last season I got injured whilst with him, but he had a big role on me whilst I was there.
“I love his style of play, it’s exactly what I stand for as a player, intense and front-footed, and I just want to get to the goal as quickly as possible. I’ve got a really good relationship with the gaffer and the staff. I can’t wait to get into training and help him get his style of play into the Sheffield United team.
“I’ve been at Villa, playing games, training and working hard just for whatever will come next. As I say, when a club like this comes calling, you can’t turn it down, and I can’t wait to get into it.”
