Hull City target Lewis O’Brien has completed a move to the Tigers’ Championship rivals Wrexham, after the second-tier newboys struck a deal with Nottingham Forest.

City had been in talks with Forest earlier this summer over finally bringing the former Huddersfield Town ace to the MKM Stadium, but had stepped away in favour of another target prior to their EFL transfer fee restriction ban.

That left the door open for ambitious Wrexham to bring the 26-year-old to the Racecourse Ground on a deal until the end of the 2027/28 campaign, for what the club says is an undisclosed fee.

Reports suggest the deal could be worth as much as £5m to Premier League Forest, who have been keen to move the midfielder on during the summer window.

“I’m absolutely buzzing. It’s been a long time coming, but to be here is great,” O’Brien said after penning a deal in North Wales on Thursday. The last couple of years have been a whirlwind for me and my family, but to sign a long-term contract and find somewhere I can call home is a great feeling.

“After speaking to everyone here, it’s a Club with a lot of ambition. I want to be part of that journey, and take Wrexham to where they want to be.”

Former City boss and current chief at Wrexham, Phil Parkinson, hailed the arrival of O’Brien, who spent the second half of last season on loan in the south of the country, at Swansea City.

“I’m delighted to welcome Lewis to the club,” Parkinson said. “He’s a player with a lot of experience at this level and will be a great addition to the group. We’re looking forward to working with him.”

The Welsh outfit, who host City in the Carabao Cup on August 12, have also completed a permanent deal for the son of Tigers legend Dean Windass, Josh, after his departure from crisis club Sheffield Wednesday. They’ve also been linked with a move for striker Kieffer Moore. The Welsh international was close to a move to City 12 months ago, before opting to join Sheffield United.
