Hull City are in talks with defender Akin Famewo over a permanent move to the MKM Stadium as Sergej Jakirovic looks to bolster his defensive ranks. The 26-year-old from London is a free agent after leaving crisis club Sheffield Wednesday last month, and could be a Tigers player as soon as this weekend.
Hull Live understands a move for the powerful central defender could be wrapped up by the middle of the week, with a chance he is involved at Stockport County on Saturday as Jakirovic gets his first taste of action in front of City supporters on English soil.
The Tigers have moved quickly in an attempt to source cover for Sean McLoughlin, who left City’s training camp in Istanbul on Thursday to return to England and seal a move to Blackburn Rovers.
Alfie Jones is expected to seal a move to City’s Championship rivals Middlesbrough, so the arrival of Famewo would add valuable cover to Charlie Hughes, John Egan and Semi Ajayi, who joined from West Brom earlier in the summer.
The move is expected to be given the green light by the EFL, with City currently able to bring in free transfers and loan signings, provided there is no fee attached.
Famewo struggled with injury last season at Hillsborough and played just 13 times in the Championship, though he did play 79 minutes against the Tigers in April before coming off prior to Charlie Hughes’ bullet winner in stoppage time.
He was offered fresh terms by the Owls at the end of the season, but has opted to leave in search of a fresh start and it looks like that could be at the MKM Stadium.
The Lewisham-born player, who has dual citizenship with Nigeria, played 73 times for Wednesday, having moved from Charlton Athletic where he turned out on 62 occasions and he counts Norwich City, Luton Town, St Mirren and Grimsby Town as his former clubs.
