A former Hull business leader is set to cycle his age to celebrate his 70th birthday – and raise vital funds for charity.

John Holmes is poised to embark on the ultimate endurance test for his big birthday, by cycling 70 miles to raise vital funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK, a cause close to his heart.

The former chief executive at regeneration agency Hull Forward and former governor of Hull College Group was also chief executive of Hull Citybuild at a time which saw the organisation lead the delivery of major City developments and regeneration projects.

Now semi retired and living in Northumberland, he has set out a path to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK following a close friend’s diagnosis with the cruel disease.

On July 28, he will visit a number of football stadiums across the North East, starting in Darlington and including Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Sunderland before finishing on The Helix site in Newcastle.

John said: “To celebrate my 70th, I wanted to do something a little different that not only represented a physical and mental challenge but also had the opportunity to help people.

“This sponsored cycle supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK, is deeply personal to me. A very dear friend is currently facing the devastating challenges of this condition, and this ride is dedicated to her and her family.

“There are countless others affected by this cruel and relentless disease. Recent advancements offer hope. Breakthrough drugs have shown promise in slowing cognitive decline by targeting the disease’s root causes. However, challenges remain, including the need for earlier and more accurate diagnoses to ensure patients can benefit from these treatments.

“Every mile I pedal is a step towards hope, a recognition of the amount of research taking place in the north east and a testament to the power of community in driving change.”

A football fan and lifelong supporter of Sunderland AFC, John measured the distances between the grounds and worked out a route that would allow him to visit each one, while pedalling his precise age.

He added: “From the Premier League to the Northern League, this region has some incredible football clubs and fantastic stadia. This journey will be a bit of a labour of love, taking in two of my great passions: cycling and footy.”

Dementia is the UK’s leading cause of death, with nearly one million people currently living with the condition. Alzheimer’s Research UK has committed over £237m to vital research, but continued support is needed to fund breakthroughs that offer real hope for the future.

Donations can be made to support John’s ride at his Just Giving fundraising page which has already received £2,285.
