Little beats a family summer day at the beach – but it can be even more fun with man’s best friend.
There are a number of beaches near Hull that are dog friendly — ensuring that your furry friends can join in the fun oceanside. Here are five options within an hour of Hull where you can take Fido along with the rest of your family.
Tunstall Beach
Tunstall Beach is a dog-friendly beach where dogs are allowed all year round. The downside is that according to Yorkshire Beaches, there are little to no facilities at Tunstall beach and you may find you have to go to a neighbouring town or village to find the closest amenities.
It is described as a lesser-used sandy beach, but has a huge amount of space so it never feels busy, even in the peak of Summer – sounds perfect to us!
Parking is sparse but you can try Pier Road Car Park (Withernsea, HU19 2HH). Another option to visit Tunstall beach is to walk from neighbouring Withernsea beach which is easier to get to from the likes of Hull, Beverley and York.
A handful of buses go to Tunstall beach on the East Yorkshire bus service which runs between Hornsea and Withernsea, you should check the timetable before you set off.
Withernsea has a number of shops, restaurants and cafes, plus toliets (The Promenade, Withernsea, HU19 2JS).
Mappleton Beach
Dogs are welcome to have a splash in the sea and a run about on the sand. at Mappleton Beach. And best of all, they are allowed on the sand across the entire year.
This wide sandy beach located in front of the village of the same name can be found about half-an-hour from the centre of Hull.
Visitors need to be aware of a few hazards, the coastline is susceptible to eroding cliffs and the beach was a former MoD bombing range. If you see any un-exploded ordnance or metal objects give them a wide berth and contact the authorities.

Hessle Foreshore
This is situated in front of the Humber Bridge Country Park next to the estuary. Being at the start of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail, it is great for walkers and is dog friendly.
While it’s not a sandy beach, it’s a popular spot for walks, picnics, and enjoying views of the estuary and bridge. Dogs are welcome on leads along the foreshore and in the country park, and there are various walks and paths suitable for dog walking.
Many people have commented about the scenery of this location and it offers not only a gravel beach but lots of greenery which will stimulate a dog’s curiosity.
Easington Beach
According to My Pawfect Place, Easington Beach – located just south of Withernsea on the East Yorkshire coast – is a hidden gem for dog lovers. It has pebbly shores, a quiet atmosphere, and stunning coastal views which offer a peaceful day out with your dog in tow.
The beach is easily accessible by car, making it a convenient destination for a day trip to spend time with your pet away from more built up areas. The beach is about six miles south of Withernsea, along the B1445. Public transport options are limited so travelling by car is your best bet.

Parking can be a bit of a nightmare with only a few places along the sea road, and the beach is mainly a playground for the local holiday park but if you do manage to get out of the car, the payoff is worth it. Be aware though that it can be difficult coming off the cliffs to the beach due to soil erosion which is a common problem on this particular piece of coastline.
Dogs are allowed all year round and it is a great destination to take your pets on a seaside adventure if you plan accordingly.
Barmston Beach
The long sandy beach at Barmston provides a dog friendly location right across the entire year according to the Beach Guide. Stretching over 2km to the town of Bridlington in the north, there is no shortage of space at the beach so if it does get busy, there is still plenty of room. There are also 50 free car parking spaces which make it a good place to drive to, although some have warned about parking on verges and getting ticketed.
