Hull KR have announced a special documentary dedicated to club legend Mike Smith.

Smith, the club’s record appearance maker and former club captain, will be celebrated in a full-length documentary that will air next month to commemorate 50 years since he made his debut for the club.

Smith is the club’s current president but before that, he had an iconic career in red and white, making 489 appearances, in which time he wom eight medals.

Born in Hull in January 1958, Smith made his first team debut at Barrow in March 1975. His first medal for Rovers came when they triumphed over St Helens in the BBC Floodlit Trophy final in December 1977.

Smith secured the first of his three First Division championship medals in May 1979, and embarked on his inaugural Great Britain tour to Australasia that summer, making his test debut against New Zealand in June.

In May 1980, Smith was part of Rovers’ victorious Challenge Cup side against Hull FC, and the subsequent season saw him play in the team that clinched Rovers’ first Premiership title, defeating Hull FC at Headingley.

He then played a pivotal role in Rovers’ two most successful seasons, 1983/84 and 1984/85, securing back-to-back First Division titles, another Premiership trophy in 1984 and the John Player Cup in 1985.

Smith took the role of club captain in 1988 before making his final appearance in 1991. He scored 140 tries, placing him seventh on the club’s all-time list. He was named as club president in 2017.

The documentary will premiere on July 24th and can purchased via DVD or via stream access through Hull KR TV.
