Hull City have been given a trip to newly-promoted Wrexham in the first round of the Carabao Cup in what will be the Welsh side’s first home game of the new season.
City will visit the Racecourse Ground and come up against former boss Phil Parkinson and ex-players Ryan Longman and Andy Cannon as they look to end their four-year hoodoo of going out in the first round, against a club riding the crest of a wave following a flurry of successive promotions under their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny.
The Tigers have not met Wrexham in a competitive fixture since a 2-1 victory in February 2005. Their last win at the Racecourse did come in the League Cup, winning 3-2 in August 2001.
The game will be played in midweek after the Tigers’ opening game of the Championship at Coventry City and before the opening home clash with Oxford United at the MKM Stadium. That game will be moved, owing to a clash with Hull FC.
City will hope for better in a competition that has not generally served them well in recent seasons. Since reaching the semi-final in 2016/17 where they were beaten over two legs by Manchester United, the Tigers have failed to make it past round three.
In each of the last four years, the Tigers have gone out at the first attempt. Last term, they were beaten by Sheffield Wednesday at the MKM Stadium.
Wrexham start their first campaign back at Championship level for the first time in 43 years away at Southampton live on Sky Sports.
