Hornsea Inshore Rescue has launched an appeal to raise funds for a proposed rooftop terrace café at its boat launch facility in the resort.
Plans for the South Promenade independent rescue boat base were approved earlier this year and will mean the whole rooftop being decked and surrounded by a glass wall with plenty of comfortable seating and tables and a bespoke staircase and lift to provide access. The charity believes that this will not only increase the funds for Hornsea Inshore Rescue but also provide a significant tourist attraction.
Sue Hickson-Marsay, chairman and station manager for Hornsea Inshore Rescue, said: “We are launching our rooftop terrace appeal to raise £400,000 to provide a much-needed addition to our Lifeboat Station and Boat Launch Café. It will provide a fantastic eating experience with an unrivalled view right around the bay with customers being comfortably protected by a state of the art glass balustrade all around the perimeter.
“This new space will not only help provide vital ongoing funds through promoting community and hospitality events but will also provide a welcoming place for visitors, school groups and supporters to learn more about the lifesaving work we do every day. This isn’t just about bricks and mortar, it’s about building a sustainable future for Hornsea Inshore Rescue and creating a space that brings our community together right at the heart of the station.
“We are looking for support, not only from the general public but also from any local businesses who may wish to sponsor us. So if you believe in the importance of a safe coastline and a strong local lifeboat service then please consider supporting our appeal.

“Every donation, no matter what the size, brings us one step closer.” Hornsea Inshore Rescue is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is a totally independent local rescue organisation, supported solely by donations and grants.
It raises funds by running courses on water safety and Royal Yachting Association courses in such as offshore power boating, jet ski handling and first-aid in the workplace. The charity offers corporate 999 days where groups of people can experience a day as a member of the crew on a training day followed by a full mock rescue experience.
The organisation’s established Seasafe Education Centre caters for visits from school children, who can learn about the rescue charity and water safety in general. For adult groups, it provides popular fish and chip lunches or suppers for pre-booked visits, with up to 50 people treated to a presentation and demonstration of what Hornsea Inshore Rescue does (email secretary@hornsearescue.org.uk with initial enquiries).
Run by volunteers and receiving no Government funding, Hornsea Inshore Rescue is not part of the RNLI. Visitors to Hornsea Inshore Rescue and volunteers are always welcome whether they would like to serve as crew (comprehensive training is given), fundraisers or general helpers.
Anyone interested can call Sue on 07796 257989 or 01964 534302. To donate to the rooftop terrace appeal, you can visit the charity’s crowdfunding page.
