Brits have been urged to keep an eye out for two specific coins that could be combined to be worth a staggering amount. Collectors might pay in excess of £101,000 for these pre-decimal pennies from the years 1919 and 1933 due to their rarity.

The scarcity of these particular pieces is what drives their high demand amongst numismatists. Despite no longer being in circulation today, there still remains a possibility of unearthing them in old collections or tucked away in lofts.

Sharing his insights on TikTok, an expert known as the Coin Collecting Wizard, explained what to look for. He said: “Who remembers these pre-decimal pennies? Check out these rare ones.”

Highlighting a notable 1919 piece first, he said: “The 1919 KN penny is a rare and highly sought after coin among collectors and one to definitely keep an eye out for.” This penny stands out as it bears the “KN” initials on its tail side – this indicates it was minted at King’s Norton Mint as opposed to the Royal Mint.

Delving deeper, he added: “Struck at the King’s Norton Mint, hence the KN Mint Mark below the date, it was part of a limited batch produced when the Royal Mint had to delegate some of its minting duties following World War One. While not all 1919 pennies are specially valuable, those with the KN mark are significantly rarer, more so if they’re in prime condition.”

Should you happen to stumble upon this particular coin in top-notch condition, you might be able to sell it for a sum upwards of £1,000. He explained: “In mint or uncirculated condition this penny can fetch well over £1,000 making it a valuable piece of British numismatic history.

“Its scarcity, historical context and distinctive mint mark all add to its appeal for collectors.” Then he touched upon the notorious 1933 penny.

Unearthing one in your loose change is exceedingly unlikely as it is believed that a mere seven were ever minted. The lack of demand for new pennies at that time led to its limited production.

The reverse side of the coin showcases Britannia, while the front bears a portrait of George V. Owing to its extreme rarity, such a penny could command a staggering £100,000.

He elaborated: “The 1933 penny, yeah you are not going to find this one as only seven are known to exist but if you did then you are looking at over £100,000.”
