Matt Peet insists there’s more to come from his Wigan Warriors outfit as the Super League competition reaches its halfway point.
Talk of a Hull KR treble has been mooted following their Challenge Cup success, ending their 40-year wait for silverware. They defeated Warrington Wolves at Wembley thanks to a last-gasp winner. But the Cherry and Whites remain favourites to be crowned Super League champions once again later in October, and are proving to be Rovers’ biggest obstacle.
Hull KR are approaching 12 months unbeaten against every Super League outfit – except from Wigan Warriors. Peet’s side claimed last year’s title at Old Trafford, and emerged victorious when the two sides met in April at the Sewell Group Craven Park, claiming a 28-12 result.
The Warriors currently sit second on the table and are flying slightly under the radar amid Hull KR’s surge. Still, Peet remains optimistic about his side’s progress. Just two points separate the clubs on the table, with Rovers to host Catalans Dragons on Friday back in Super League, while Wigan will take on Huddersfield Giants at the home of Dewsbury Rams.
Asked to assess his side’s season so far, Peet responded: “Just okay. Obviously we’d have loved to have gotten further in the Challenge Cup.
“We’ve lost a couple of tight games, but I can see where we’re building. We’re relatively healthy, and I think our best rugby is ahead of us.
“We won’t be getting carried away with ourselves, but I think we’re in a decent position.”
Wigan and Hull KR next meet in August.
