Here’s a run down of some of the planning applications that have recently been submitted to East Riding Council which include changes to part of the former M&S in Bridlington.
4-7 Prince Street, Bridlington
The council has received an application for a number of changes along Price Street in Bridlington. The four properties (4, 5, 6, and 7 Prince Street) are all under the same ownership but all have completely distinct exteriors. Of the properties, number 7 perhaps has the most notable history having made up part of the town’s former Marks and Spencer store. The application seeks to update the signage on all four properties in a more traditional style. Submitted documents state the current shop fronts “are not in-keeping with the traditional style of their individual buildings or the wider Conservation Area.”
The application also seeks to turn the upper floors of numbers 6 and 7 into a thirteen room hotel which would be accessed from an entrance on Prince Street.
No more ‘WH Smith’

Following the announcement earlier this year that High Street WH Smith stores would be renamed ‘TG Jones’ following a £76 million takeover deal by the owner of Hobbycraft, Modella Capital, the council has received a number of applications for new signage at WH Smith stores across the region. Applications have been made for new TG Jones branding to replace the existing WH Smith branding at:
- WH Smith on Middle Street South, Driffield
- WH Smith – 39-41 Toll Gavel, Beverley
- WH Smith Books – 6-8 Toll Gavel, Beverley
Event Tipis
The council has also received an application for a temporary tented structure to be erected at Townend Farm, south of Market Weighton between each April and October. Planning documents state the tipi would be used for events linked to the Polo Club including private events such as weddings.
These applications will now be decided upon by East Riding Council’s planning team.
