Hull KR have ended their long search for a major trophy, with the Robins defeating Warrington Wolves 8-6 to win the Challenge Cup final on Saturday evening.

And they’re not the only sporting club to end a Barron run this year – even continuing the ‘year of the bird’ theme seen across football this season.

Earning their first piece of major silverware since 1985, Rovers have put an end to a 40-year drought, with the Robins winning their second cup triumph after first winning the competition after victory over local rivals Hull in 1980.

That continues the trend seen after Newcastle United (Magpies), Crystal Palace (Eagles), and Tottenham Hotspur (Cockerels) all ended their Barron runs – even in one case winning a major trophy for the first ever time.

That was Palace, whose 1-0 triumph over Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley marked their first ever major honour.

Meanwhile, Spurs won their first major honour in 17 years, defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final in Bilbao last month.

And Newcastle won their first major trophy in 56 years after their League Cup victory over Liverpool back in February. The Magpies won 2-1 at Wembley.

Further field, Italian side Bologna ended a 51-year drought by beating AC Milan 2-1 in the Italian Cup final in Rome.

And how about a 92-year wait? That was the case for Dutch football team Go Ahead Eagles. The Deventer-based side beat AZ Alkmaar on penalties to win the Netherlands cup final and ensure their first piece of major silverware since 1933. Imagine the scenes.
