Hull FC could be handed a huge recruitment boost in the coming days, with the RFL expected to grant at least one additional quota spot for Super League clubs next year.

Hull are one of many Super League clubs that have been pushing for the passing of a quota exemption rule in recent weeks. The exemption would allow the Black and Whites to keep mid-season recruit Liam Knight under their quota allowance into 2026 and beyond.

As it stands, Super League clubs are allowed seven spots per season to use on overseas talent. The quota exemption, meanwhile, would make overseas players playing in UK competitions since 2020 exempt from the quota cap.

This would allow new signing James Bell, who, as per Hull Live, has signed for Hull from St Helens from 2026 and beyond, to fit under the quota, with the club using their then vacant spot on Knight.

And Hull Live understands the expectation is that at least one additional quota spot will be granted next year, allowing Super League clubs eight spots to fill. This would be a significant boost for Hull, who have made no secret of their desire to keep Knight, who has impressed since joining Hull from Australia back in March.

Hull Live first reported the club’s interest in keeping Knight last month, with John Cartwright soon confirming. The prop forward has been ever-present since debuting against Leigh in round four. He has played big minutes ever since and offered Hull some stability and punch in the middle of the field.

His performances have ensured Hull, who signed the 30-year-old on a deal until the end of the current season, hold the desire to extend his contract. However, the club, who have been much improved this year, face competition to keep him.

As per All Out Rugby League, Warrington Wolves are also interested in the player, with the Wire currently coached by Knight’s former South Sydney Rabbitohs teammate and good friend Sam Burgess.

The Wire could counter Hull with a competitive offer, something the club will be wary about. But the Black and Whites value the player’s contributions so far and are confident that he would get even better in their environment in the years to come.

As it stands, Hull’s seven quota players for 2026 are John Asiata, James Bell, Jed Cartwright, Cade Cust, Herman Ese’ese, Jordan Rapana, and Aidan Sezer.

Current quota player Ligi Sao, at the club since 2020, is also out of contract at the end of the season, and under the exemption, would count off the quota. However, it’s not clear at this stage whether one of two exemptions will be made. The player is currently recovering from a season-ending knee injury.

Meanwhile, Black and Whites have also signed Joe Batchelor from St Helens for 2026, as well as Wigan prop Harvie Hill and York back rower Connor Bailey. They have also confirmed several contract extensions this year.
