A group of friends will be crossing the Humber Bridge in style with the help of wheelbarrows and there is a deep meaning behind the stunt.

Brothers Kieran, 31, Elliot, 25, and Finlay Scholey, 24, and their friend Ashley Harris, 31, will be raising money for Hull and East Riding-based mental health charity Mysterious Minds.

Ashley told Hull Live mental health is close to their hearts and they thought Mysterious Minds was a worthy cause, helping many people who have lost loved ones to the tragedy of suicide. They will set off at 9am on Saturday, June 7, from Darley’s Pub in Hessle and then cross the Humber Bridge.

Explaining the symbolism behind the wheelbarrows, Ashley said: “When you go through mental health problems, you help each other along. So it’s about pushing each other along the way and helping each other.”

They have launched a Go Fund Me page for donations which, at the time of writing, is on just under £500. They said any donations “will be greatly appreciated by us four lads” and will “help Mysterious Minds in a big way”.

In the description, they say Mysterious Minds “do so much for families who have sadly lost their loved ones to suicide”. They add: “The support they give helps so many, and we want to help them and give a little back. They solely run through donations and get no other support.”

They add: “We will be taking it in turns pushing each other in the wheelbarrows along the way. This idea came to us, as sometimes people just need that little push in life to keep going.”

Mysterious Minds was founded in 2017 by Leona Dalee and her sister, Chelsey Dalee. Its original aim was to help provide financial support for the funerals of those who have taken their own lives, but it now provides other services such as Christmas Eve boxes for children who have lost a parent to suicide.

In its first eight months, Mysterious Minds helped pay for nine funerals. Talking to Hull Live at the time, Leona said deaths by suicide are often unexpected “so people don’t have the money there to pay for a funeral”.
