Three people have been rescued in two separate incidents on the east coast, within the space of three days.

On Sunday, June 1, Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team (BCRT) responded to reports of a lone male in a small inflatable dinghy approximately one mile off the coast of Barmston. The casualty was caught out by the strong offshore breeze and was unable to make it back to shore.

BCRT said in a post about the incident: “Given the offshore location and potential risk to life, the Bridlington RNLI Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) was requested and launched. The lifeboat crew were coned onto the vessel’s location by Coastguard officers, where they swiftly recovered the casualty and brought the dinghy safely back to shore.

“The Bridlington Coastguard team is reminding the public of the importance of carrying appropriate safety equipment when heading out to sea. A reliable means of calling for help — such as a VHF radio, mobile phone in a waterproof pouch, or a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) — is essential for safety and rescue.”

Matt Johnson, deputy station officer for BCRT, said: “We’d like to extend our thanks to the Bridlington RNLI ILB crew for their rapid and professional response. This incident highlights how important strong working relationships are between our teams, this incident could have ended very differently.”

The incident followed an emergency callout on Friday, May 30, by HM Coastguard teams from both Bridlington and Hornsea, to Skipsea, following reports of two people cut off by the tide at the base of the cliffs.

Rope rescue technicians from the teams were deployed and, in a co-ordinated response, a Humberside Police officer was lowered to the casualties’ location with the Coastguard technician to provide reassurance and assess their condition.

“This allowed responders to confirm the wellbeing of both individuals and ensure they were ready to be safely extracted,” a post by BCRT said. “Both casualties were successfully brought to safety without injury thanks to the skill and professionalism of the Coastguard rope rescue teams.

“This rescue demonstrates how vital partnership working is in ensuring the safety of the public. The seamless co-ordination between our teams and Humberside Police allowed us to bring two people to safety efficiently and safely. We’re proud of the professionalism shown by all involved.”

People are reminded that if you see someone in trouble at the coast or at sea, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
