Hull City have stepped up their efforts to bring in a replacement boss to replace Ruben Selles after the Spaniard was sacked on Thursday evening.

Selles guided City to safety on the final day of the Championship season two weeks ago but was relieved of his duties by owner Acun Ilicali after the Tigers’ owner decided to seek a change of approach.

No sooner had Selles met with sporting director Jared Dublin on Thursday to be met with his fate, and Ilicali was looking to secure a replacement he hopes could be in place within the next week or so, though that isn’t a fixed timescale.

The Tigers’ owner is thought to be aware of the need to move the process along quickly and have somebody in place sooner rather than later, and avoid a repeat of last summer which saw the club find themselves well behind the eight ball by the time the season started.

City have a shortlist of candidates for the role, which Hull Live understands has been whittled down to around three names, with interviews expected to continue over the weekend and into the early part of next week.

Discussions with potential new recruits have begun to take place with Ilicali, along with Dublin, head of recruitment Martin Hodge and head of international recruitment Mustapha Yokes.

As revealed by Hull Live on Monday, the quartet all met at Ilicali’s Istanbul offices on Tuesday to thrash out the situation with Selles’ future and strike a plan of action moving forward which has been expedited following Selles’ exit.

The Tigers have previously interviewed the likes of Alex Neil, who is now at Millwall after impressing the board, and spoken to Steve Cooper before he took over at Leicester City. Gary O’Neil and Rob Edwards could yet be managers of interest, while a host of Championship clubs are looking at Miron Muslic after almost guiding Plymouth Argyle to safety. Former Newcastle United midfielder Emre is another name Ilicali could look at again, having held a long-term interest and is keen to try his hand in management in England after enjoying a playing career on these shores.

City are not the only Championship club looking for a new manager ahead of pre-season, with relegated Southampton, West Brom, Norwich City, and QPR all managerless. Leicester City could join that list once the Premier League campaign finishes, with Ruud van Nistelrooy expected to move on. Sheffield Wednesday are another with doubts surrounding the future of one-time Tigers target Danny Rohl likely to leave Hillsborough.

Hull City remain an attractive job for potential new recruits as the Tigers look for another new appointment just six months after their last, according to David Prutton.

The Hull-born former player and Sky Sports broadcaster has warned owner Acun Ilicali and those around him that the pressure is on to get the next appointment right, after Ruben Selles became the third manager to be sacked in the space of 12 months.

Selles was given his marching orders on Thursday evening, having guided City to Championship survival on the final day less than two weeks earlier.

For Tigers fans, attention now turns to who will take charge as another summer of major change looms large on the horizon. The likes of Gary O’Neil will likely be on the shortlist, City may also opt to consider the likes of Miron Muslic and Alex Neil, while Antalyaspor chief Emre, the former Newcastle United midfielder, could be on a lengthy list of candidates.

Despite what many would consider something of a difficult job, Prutton believes given the size of club and potential, City remain an attractive option for potential new managers.

“The history books will tell you what you need to know, but City fans will know that was the day they stayed up on the final day at Pompey and wonder what does come next,” he said on the 1904 Club podcast.

“It’s up to the people that are in charge in the hierarchy of the football club to get this next decision right. That sense of what does come next and what City then sound like. I’m not saying for one second saying we’re sat here in the same breath as a Watford setup of hiring and firing, but when you talk about number of managers in the years in which the managers have moved on, it starts ticking over in that territory. I’ve said Hull City’s a good job and I still do believe that. Maybe there’s a bit of sentimentality in that for me.”

Hull City have started the search for their fourth manager in a year following the decision to sack Ruben Selles after less than six months in charge at the MKM Stadium. The news probably took few by surprise when it finally came late on Thursday evening, with a clear sense in the past few days the wind was blowing in that direction from the east, where owner Acun Ilicali and his ‘brains trust’ were meeting to decide what decision to take next after a shambolic season that somehow just avoided the disaster of relegation.

Brought in to keep Hull City in the Championship after the horror show that was Tim Walter’s brief tenure in charge, Selles achieved the main task handed to him by the owner upon his arrival. However, while safety was confirmed the manner in which it was achieved and the style of football played had not impressed the City owner, who opted for another change of manager.

Supporters were quick to have their say on the issue with our website flooded with comments, while BBC Radio Humberside took a host of bemused and frustrated callers and those messaging in after it became apparent Selles was departing. That’s not to say the decision was totally unpopular, with the now former manager having lost the faith of some supporters many weeks before.

We asked City fans to give us their opinion on a simple question, are Hull City right to sack Ruben Selles? Almost 2,000 people voted in our poll with a clear message sent over the decision. Only 18 percent of the people who voted said it was the right decision for Selles to be sacked.

A fraction over a fifth of the people polled were on the fence regarding the decision, with 21 percent neither angry or happy with the Spaniard’s exit, as they wait to see what happens next. While a large 61 percent of those who voted said it was absolutely not the correct decision to give Selles his marching orders.

Poll results – Are Hull City right to sack Ruben Selles?

Yes, it’s the right decision: 18%

I’m on the fence: 21%

Absolutely not: 61%

We now want to know who you would like to see become the next City manager based on a list we’ve compiled of potential candidates. Have your say below.

Ruben Selles’ six-month spell as head coach at Hull City has been brought to an end by owner Acun Ilicali, less than two weeks after the season ended.

Their gutsy, stressful and nervy 1-1 draw at Portsmouth proved enough to secure the club’s Championship survival, with help from West Brom, who thrashed Luton Town 5-3 to relegate the Hatters.

The Spaniard won nine of his 26 league games in charge, drawing seven and losing 11. His side scored 26 and conceded 26, taking 33 points at a rate of 1.27 points per game. The neutral goal difference ultimately proved crucial in surviving, helped by a newfound defensive solidity bettered only by Leeds United, Burnley and Sheffield United.

Selles inherited a difficult situation when he took charge before Christmas. He watched from the stands as City were beaten 1-0 at home by Blackburn Rovers, a result which left the Tigers bottom of the table with 15 points from their opening 19 games – their sixth straight defeat and latest at home.

Not only did he take on a squad down on confidence and feeling the impact of Tim Walter’s failed tenure, it lacked quality in the top third of the pitch and two of the club’s big summer signings – Liam Millar and Mohamed Belloumi – had suffered ACL injuries, while Oscar Zambrano had been banned for a doping charge committed before he joined the club.

His first game was a 1-1 draw at home to Watford and that was backed up by a 2-1 defeat at Coventry City. His side led in both games before being pegged back.

City’s first victory under Selles came when Mason Burstow culled in a delightful winner to seal a 2-1 success before Christmas, and despite losing at Preston on Boxing Day, the year ended with a fine win at play-off-chasing Blackburn Rovers courtesy of Ryan Longman’s goal – he’s now a League One promotion-winner with Wrexham.

A pulsating 3-3 draw against Leeds United at the MKM Stadium came after a late home defeat to Middlesbrough kicked off the New Year, but the standout result of the campaign came late in January when Selles’ men won 3-0 at Sheffield United, inflicting a first home league defeat on the Blades. Unfortunately, Selles’ side could not build on that result and suffered continued setbacks after positive results, failing to win two games on the spin. It provided an unwelcome backdrop to the second half of the campaign.

The January transfer window was crucial with the likes of Matt Crooks, Joe Gelhardt, Eliot Matazo, John Egan, Nordin Amrabat, and Lincoln all coming in, while Louie Barry’s arrival was met with great excitement before he suffered a major knee injury just four games in.

Crooks’ goal at Pompey effectively kept City in the league, but Gelhardt’s five goals proved vital, as did Egan’s experience in providing some much-needed defensive solidity.

An away win at Sunderland gave City renewed belief but defeats at home to Stoke City and away at Cardiff City on the back of those wins, meant the Tigers were unable to drag themselves clear of danger.

Losing Matazo, who had started to shine with a terrific display in the win at the Stadium of Light, was a major blow, and injuries again hampered them.

An unbeaten run of four games leading into the international break, with vital home wins against Plymouth Argyle and Oxford United, coupled with a terrific away point at Bristol City with 10 men after Joao Pedro’s red card 90 seconds after his brilliant goal, created a five-point gap between them and the bottom three. That was cut to three following their fightback draw at West Brom, coupled with Derby County’s win at Plymouth Argyle. Unfortunately, throughout the second half of the campaign, City could not create and maintain more breathing space with a succession of inconsistent results, formed by a chronic lack of goals.

A turgid defeat to Luton Town immediately after the March break dragged them deeper into the mire, but they responded with a huge 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday courtesy of Charlie Hughes’ bullet header in the 93rd minute, which sparked wild scenes of celebration at Hillsborough after a game that resembled the most tepid of pre-season friendlies.

Yet again, Selles and his staff were unable to inspire a response the following Tuesday when his side produced a limp away display to lose at Watford. A draw with Coventry followed before another poor away display saw them beaten at Swansea City on Good Friday, albeit to a shambolic penalty decision given against Egan.

Easter Monday brought fresh light, and hope, with a 2-1 home win against Preston courtesy of a Joe Gelhardt brace of penalty kicks, but once again, City were unable to back that up, losing 1-0 at home to relegation rivals Derby County which sparked frustrating scenes at the end of the game.

That result plunged City into the bottom three with just one game to go, albeit in the unique situation of having their fate in their own hands. It also saw Selles cancel the club’s Player of the Season dinner.

And by hook or crook, the Tigers survived on goal difference, but will now face another summer of major upheaval as Ilicali searches for his fifth permanent manager since taking ownership of the club in January 2022 and a manager he believes capable of delivering what he wants.

After what happened last summer, with Walter’s tumultuous tenure coupled with mixed recruitment, much of which happened just before the season started, Ilicali must guard against the same happening again and make sure his appointment is swift and sensible.

Given how the past year has played out, fans will be nervously watching what happens next because the club has regressed badly over that period, and their concern is understandable. They’re worried about the trajectory over the past 12 months and what that means going forward.

The focus on style of play has to be shelved. Being successful in the Championship is about being organised, fit, disciplined and knowing how to get the best out of the players at your disposal to win games of football. The ability to get those characteristics from a manager should be at the top of the person specification.

The appointment immediately following Rosenior was huge, and that went badly wrong and is a key reason we are where we are now. This one is even more important, and with it, the level of recruitment over the summer to support the new man and ensure he isn’t left to start the season with two hands tied behind his back.

City are once again at a critical juncture under the ownership of Acun Ilicali. What happens next may well go one of two ways.

Head coach Ruben Selles is set to be sacked by Hull City owner Acun Ilicali after just over six months in the MKM Stadium hotseat.

Selles, who took charge in mid-December with the club bottom of the Championship, guided the Tigers to safety on the final day of the season with a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth earlier this month.

The search now begins for Ilicali’s fifth permanent manager since taking ownership of the club in January 2022, with City hoping to make a swift appointment ahead of the players returning to pre-season training at the beginning of July for what is a pivotal summer.

We’ll have all the fallout from Ilicali’s big decision over the coming hours and days as we head towards another huge appointment at City.

Hull City have been praised for the pricing of their memberships for the new Championship season after fans were informed of the changes on Wednesday.

City have received many plaudits in recent years for their sensible pricing and that has continued ahead of the new campaign which kicks off in early August, with supporters on social media acknowledging the Tigers keeping prices as low as possible.

Some fans have noticed a slight increase in their monthly membership price to cover rising costs impacting everyone (no more than £2), but even the most expensive seats in the MKM Stadium still work out at less than £22 per game. For fans sitting in the cheaper areas behind both goals in the North and South Stands, it costs around £15 per match, which represents incredible value for money.

Keen to attract the next generation of City fans, prices for children remain terrific value with no youngster aged between two and 15 paying more than £3 per game. Based on prices in the South Stand, an adult could take a child to watch a Championship game of football for less than £20.

Not only do City’s ticket prices stand up well against many of their Championship rivals, but fans can also benefit from a host of events throughout the season, as well as earning points to spend on merchandise.

While the Tigers endured a torrid campaign on the pitch this season and only staving off the threat of relegation on the final day of the season with a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth, there’s a belief that next term will be a much brighter one with a sensible summer of recruitment, especially up front.

Key to any success next season will be sorting out the desperate home form, which has blighted the Tigers since they returned to the Championship. But despite the lack of wins at the MKM Stadium, the club averaged a little under 22,000 with a host of sell-outs including games against Leeds United and Derby County.

Some City supporters will also benefit from the introduction of safe standing in time for the big kick-off, with around 2,700 seats set to be converted in different areas of the MKM Stadium.

The EFL have confirmed that the transfer window will close earlier than usual later this summer, in a move that will have a direct impact on Hull City.

Instead of closing at the usual time of 11pm on September 1, the summer window will now slam shut at 7pm in a bid to ease the workload on club staff and those working at the EFL on what is usually a frantic deadline day.

There have also been changes to the registration window to accommodate the FIFA Club World Cup next month, meaning clubs will be given an additional 10 days at the start of the month. Rules are in place to ensure the window does not open for longer than 89 days.

City and their Championship rivals will be able to conduct business from Sunday, June 1, to 7pm on Tuesday, June 10, in the first phase and will remain closed from then until June 16. From Monday, June 16, the window will be open for business until 7pm on September 1. It will then remain closed until January 1, 2026.

“Due to an additional FIFA Club World Cup Registration Period introduced ahead of the start of the FIFA Club World Cup, the EFL and its Clubs have agreed that the summer transfer window shall operate for an additional ten-day period from Sunday 1 June 2025 to 19:00 on Tuesday 10 June 2025,” the EFL said in a statement on Wednesday. “This is due to the transfer window being unable to exceed a total of 89 days.

“The FIFA regulation on this matter permits the member associations of Clubs playing in the FIFA Club World Cup to establish this exceptional registration period, and there is therefore likely to be considerable transfer activity taking place across the world’s major leagues during this time. The EFL therefore believes that its Clubs should also have the opportunity to be active in the market at this time. The FIFA Club World Cup is set to take place between 14 June 2025 and 13 July 2025. “

Full dates for the closure of the winter 2026 transfer window have not yet been confirmed and will be announced at a later date.

Meanwhile, fixture for the next Championship season will be released from 12pm on Thursday, June 26, with the first round of the Carabao Cup made later on that day at 4:30pm. City’s new Championship campaign kicks off over the weekend of August 8-10.

The Premier League and the English Football League (EFL) have reportedly reached an agreement over the Football Association’s proposed rule change for the summer transfer deadline, which would have a major impact on Hull City‘s deadline day business.

Clubs in England have been informed that the window will shut four hours earlier than it usually closes, according to the Daily Mail.

The report states that move from 11pm to 7pm is aimed at providing staff working across football clubs on deadline day a more normal working pattern. Those who work on the admin side at clubs and at the leagues can often end up at their desks beyond midnight due to late deals.

It is hoped that bringing the deadline forward by four hours will minimise the impact on employees, but there are said to be some concerns, however, that clubs may not be able to get all their business completed within the new timeframe. Some executives fear it will give other clubs in Europe an advantage in the final hours of the market.

Last term, City were busy on summer deadline day bringing in the likes of Carl Rushworth, Kasey Palmer and Mohamed Belloumi, while they chased late deals right up until the 11pm deadline.

The report states: “There is also a view that, while in a perfect world, business would have been conducted well before the final hours of the window, the reality is that every hour is precious as clubs scramble to get last-minute deals done.

“By bringing the cut-off forward, some argue that officials are effectively robbing vital time from those who need to make the most business. This summer there will be two windows, thanks to FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup.

“The first will run from June 1 to June 10. The second will start on June 16 and end on September 1. The longer-than-usual window is also thought to have come into the reasoning. In the winter, the window will open from January 1 to February 2.”

No official decision has yet to be taken by the FA. Clubs usually have a two-hour grace period to complete deals after the window shuts, although the relevant paperwork will need to be submitted to the FA by 7pm. Another option reportedly being discussed is for top-flight clubs to be able to loan their players out to clubs in the three EFL divisions outside of the set transfer windows. A decision has yet to be taken on when the winter transfer window will close.

Pedro signed a one-year deal at the MKM Stadium when he joined alongside fellow freebie Steven Alzate, with City having the option of a 12-month extension. But Hull Live understands the 33-year-old veteran is expected to leave the club after deciding to move on after just one season in English football.

City‘s experienced forward played 35 times in the Championship, claiming two assists to go with his half-dozen of goals. The last of his strikes came early on at Bristol City when he turned his man superbly before slotting in the back of the net. Unfortunately for him and the Tigers, he was sent off 90 seconds later for a rash challenge, which saw him banned for three games.

He missed the win over Oxford United, a draw at West Brom and a home defeat to Luton Town before returning after almost a month out after the March international break at Sheffield Wednesday.

The forward’s decision to move on from City will leave the Tigers with just Mason Burstow and Kyle Joseph as their frontline strikers until a replacement is brought in.

Signing firepower is the key this summer after City finished the campaign with just 44 goals, the lowest of anybody in the Championship.

Other decisions facing City before Saturday’s deadline include whether to activate 12-month options on the expiring deals of Dogukan Sinik, Callum Jones and Brandon Fleming. It’s expected all three will leave the club along with Nordin Amrabat, who signed a short-term contract at the MKM Stadium in January after leaving AEK Athens. He went on to make 10 appearances, with his sole assist coming for Abu Kamara’s crucial equaliser against Coventry City on April 14.

Former Hull City star Jacob Greaves says he’s delighted his hometown club secured their Championship safety a little over a week ago, and admits he’s relishing facing the Tigers next season. Greaves, who departed the MKM Stadium for Ipswich Town last summer following their promotion to the Premier League, will be back on his old stomping ground when the two clubs face off in the 2025/26 campaign.

He’ll have to wait until the end of next month to find out when that will be, but for now, the 24-year-old ace has expressed his relief that City managed to secure a dramatic survival on the final day last weekend. The powerful defender could be joined in facing his old club by fellow ex-Tigers in Liam Delap and Jaden Philogene, who are all part of Kieran McKenna’s Portman Road squad, though striker Delap is expected to move on after one season in Suffolk.

City started the final day of a gripping, if not stressful, Championship campaign in the bottom three but their draw at Fratton Park coupled with Luton Town’s heavy defeat at West Brom ensured Ruben Selles’ side staved off the threat of relegation on goal difference.

“Really pleased, it’s good for the city,” Greaves told reporters. “I was watching as much as I could before the Everton game and then when it was time to get into focus I turned it off and focused on what I had at hand.

“It’s a season for them that’s a little bit disappointing with the squad that they’ve got. It’s definitely one that’s good enough to be competing in that league, the play-offs are probably not as strong as they were last season. I’m absolutely delighted they stayed up, next season as well, playing against them will be nice too, rather than being Championship and League One.”

Greaves, who was a hugely popular figure at City, having come through the ranks and followed in the footsteps of his father, Mark, remains a firm advocate for the East Yorkshire location he calls home.

“I’ve not really thought about it that much,” he said of a potential return next term. “With the remainder of the Premier League games, I’m focused on them. I’ll think about it when it actually comes to it, but it’s just another game, I suppose.

“I’ve got nothing but love for that club. I love the place, you ask the boys here and I always big up Hull so much, they say it’s not a great place to live and I’m the one backing the city up. Hopefully I get a nice reception, if I don’t then fair enough but I’m excited to go back.”
