Here’s a run down of some of the latest planning applications that are currently being decided on by East Riding Council which include an application for the construction of a new Battery Energy Storage System Facility in Hessle.

Battery Energy Storage System Facility

East Riding Council has received an application for construction of a Battery Energy Storage System Facility (BESS) on the land North West of Humber Field Roundabout in Hessle. The proposed BESS development contains 8 battery banks, each of which consist of 24 battery units, meaning there would be a total of 192 battery units on the site. The plans also include 10 water storage tanks, a pumphouse, and 4 transformer units amongst other equipment.

The proposed site for the BESS itself is approximately 0.52 hectares, however the wider application site measures to 2.53 hectares, a site that will largely consist of grassland proposed for biodiversity.

The council received a pre-application for the BESS in December 2024 which planning documents claim received a positive response from council officers who confirmed that the development is, in principle, acceptable in the location.

Erection of new agricultural building

The council has received an application for the erection of what plans describe as “a general-purpose agricultural building to be used predominantly for the storage of agricultural machinery and equipment,” to be built at The Granary on Fitling Road in the East Yorkshire village of Humbleton.

Plans suggest the building would be of a steel frame construction with concrete panel walls. The building would have a maximum height of 5.78 metres, which in addition to the “careful selection of materials” that “will further reduce any potential visual impact” leads submitted documents to conclude that the development would not be “visually intrusive from public vantage points.”

Conversion of farm shed to a 5-bed house

The council has also received plans for the conversion of an agricultural building at an East Riding farm into a home. The application pertains to the Goodmanham Wold Farm, which is located around 2 miles North East of Market Weighton. The application is seeking permission to convert, what documents describe as a “redundant farm shed” to a five bedroom house. The proposed work to the interior includes a new floor as currently the ground floor is made up of concrete and earth, whilst works to the exterior include the removal of an existing shed and the erection of a new 1.8 metre high red brick wall.
