DIY SOS helmsman Nick Knowles has appealed for help in getting a “Big Build” project in Beverley “over the hump”.

The popular TV makeover team are in the town to create a brand new Cherry Tree Youth Club for local young people. The project, at Mudhills Park, Burden Road, was recently given the go-ahead by East Riding Council.

After an appeal by the programme for local tradespeople to get involved in the Big Build, earlier this year, Nick has now made a personal appeal on social media for particular skills that will make a real difference to the project this weekend. He posted a message on X on Friday saying: “Need some help near Hull please. Apply Diysosbeverley@southshore.uk or just rock up to HU17 9LD.

“Starting tomorrow – all weekend and into next week. Even if you can do a few hours each day or some days – come and help us.”

He supported the message with a video, saying: “We really, really need some help from people. From tomorrow [Saturday] we need plasterers; Saturday, Sunday, we need plasterers. Even if you can pop up and give us half the day.

“Help us out, come in, do a gauge, get us over this hump. Also, we need landscapers, people who are ground workers and landscapers, we need them tomorrow and Sunday.

“If you can help us out this weekend, if you are a plasterer, or a boarder even, and landscapers, we need you to come and help us out with this Big Build that we’re doing for a children’s charity, a youngsters’ charity, building a new centre for them on the other side of the tracks in Beverley. It’s a really, really worthwhile cause, so come and help us out.”

The Cherry Tree Youth Club plan is for a single-storey building including a large communal area, a kitchen and a meeting room. The design also include an outdoor gym area and a cycle path for children to use.

The scheme was unanimously approved by the East Riding’s Eastern Area Planning Sub-Committee on May 12, just before the DIY SOS team arrived on site. Cllr Paul Smith said the “wonderful project” was “long overdue” and Cllr Linda Johnson said the youth centre was a “much needed resource for the children of Beverley”.
