Gustavo Puerta admits he’s unsure what the future holds for him despite sealing a permanent move to Hull City in the closing weeks of the Championship season.

Puerta spent the season on loan at City from Bayer Leverkusen, but the Tigers had an obligation to buy him permanently for £3m once he notched up 20 starts. That came on Good Friday at Swansea City and triggered their clause.

Despite that only happening last month, Puerta could already be on his way this summer with City looking to free up space in their squad, and more importantly, valuable funds after a heavy summer of spending 12 months ago.

The midfielder could be one of those players sacrificed, but for now, he says he’s focused on spending some time with his family before pre-season begins in early July, having previously suggested he would look to move this summer.

“I don’t really know much. In football, there are all kinds of rumours, but right now my focus is on enjoying a little family vacation, continuing to prepare for next season, and then seeing what happens in the future,” Puerta said in an interview with Colombian media outlet AS.

The 21-year-old Colombian caught the eye at times during his inaugural season in English football, and says the decision to leave Leverkusen has proved to be the right one despite the Tigers’ struggles in avoiding relegation from the Championship.

“Yes, it was the right decision,” he said. “What I was looking for was to play more, and I found that at Hull City. I was able to play 31 games, which for a footballer is a good number of games in a season, so I think it was the right decision.

“It’s very important to know that I made the right decision and that, thanks to my performance and what I did well, the club is buying me. For me, it’s very important and gratifying to know that I’ve been doing things well.

“This season was too good and too beautiful. That’s why I left Bayer Leverkusen and went to Hull City because I felt the need to play more, to be a bit more of a protagonist, and this season I was. I performed very well with the team, I was able to contribute in many matches to help the team score, and I hope to continue helping the team in any way I can.”
