Hull City have made no decision over the future of head coach Ruben Selles, after the Spaniard guided the club to Championship safety on the final day at Portsmouth.
Owner Acun Ilicali is understood to be conducting a thorough review of the club’s performance this season, which saw City survive by only goal difference, having finished level on 49 points with Luton Town.
That review is thought to include the job Selles has done since taking over in what were difficult circumstances at the MKM Stadium, and whether he will be the one charged with spearheading a play-off surge next term. At this stage, though, the Spaniard remains in charge of the Tigers.
Ilicali, who has appointed four permanent managers since taking ownership of the Tigers in January 2022, brought Selles to the club in December with City rock bottom of the Championship and on a six-game losing run after a disastrous start to the campaign under Tim Walter.
Selles arrested that slide and went on to win nine games as boss, including vital successes at Sheffield United and Sunderland, as well as drawing 3-3 with eventual champions Leeds United before claiming the point at Fratton Par, which kept the Tigers in the Championship on a nerve-shredding afternoon in the South Coast sunshine.
While a change could yet be made by Ilicali, it’s understood he’s working closely with sporting director Jared Dublin and newly-appointed head of recruitment Martin Hodge to decide the best course of action moving forward. That course of action will be one that gives City the best chance of challenging for the play-offs next term.
One name linked with the job should Selles leave in the coming days, has been Tony Mowbray. The experienced former Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers chief, who was sacked by West Brom last month after a poor run of form, is not under consideration in any way, sources within the club’s hierarchy have told Hull Live.
Mowbray’s second spell in charge at The Hawthorns saw the 61-year-old manage just five wins in 18 games, a run which included a 1-1 draw against City with the Baggies falling out of play-off contention, but he will not feature on any potential shortlist, should one be required.
