Former Aston Villa star Lee Hendrie admits it would be a surprise to him if Hull City sacked Ruben Selles after the Spaniard guided the Tigers to Championship safety.
Selles’ position as Tigers head coach is under review after City survived on goal difference thanks to a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth last weekend, while Luton Town’s 5-3 thrashing at West Brom condemned them to League One.
Owner Acun Ilicali has not yet made a decision on whether Selles will remain or be moved on, according to sources involved in the club’s review of football operations.
The former Reading boss, who arrived in mid-December and won nine of his 26 league games in charge, form which saw City 12th in the table.
Hendrie, who has covered City games on numerous occasions throughout the campaign in his role as a broadcast pundit, feels parting ways with Selles would catch him off guard.
“I mean, they brought him to secure that they stay in the Championship, which they have done, so I’d be very shocked if they got rid of him,” he told FLW. “But then again, we’ve seen what the owners are like at Hull City, they’ve had their eye on play-offs, promotion for the last couple of seasons.
“And you only had to look at what they did with Liam Rosenior, he got so close and then, you know, he was gone. I think this is a little bit of a different situation because Hull found themselves in a real sticky predicament coming into the back end of the season, where they were fighting a relegation battle.
“They’ve got out of that, he’s done the job, and he did a great job when he was at Reading, so I’d be very surprised if they did part ways with him.”
