Withernsea’s new banking hub will be officially opened this week.

Cash Access UK, the organisation set up to protect access to cash across the UK, confirmed that the banking hub at 134a Queen Street will be launched with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday (May 9). Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, Cllr Sean McMaster, and Cllr Lyn Healing will be in attendance and everyone is welcome to attend, from 10.30am to 11.30am.

Customers of all major banks can visit the hub any weekday between 9am-5pm to carry out regular cash transactions, including cash withdrawals and deposits as well as checking balances or paying bills. Additionally, the hub also offers a community banker service where customers can talk to their own bank in a private space about more complicated issues on the day their bank is in the hub:

  • Monday: (HSBC coming soon)
  • Tuesday: Lloyds
  • Wednesday: Santander
  • Thursday: NatWest
  • Friday: Halifax (9am-1pm)

The hub was initially recommended by LINK, the UK’s cash access and ATM network, following the announcement of the closure of the town’s last remaining bank branch. Last year, while the permanent site for the hub was being refurbished, a temporary home for the hub was opened in the Shores Centre on Seaside Road – this has now closed.

There are now five banking hubs open in the East Riding, following Cottingham, Hessle, Hornsea and Market Weighton. A total of 156 are operating across the country.

Gareth Oakley, CEO at Cash Access UK, said: “I’m happy to announce the opening of our Withernsea hub in its permanent home, ensuring crucial access to cash and face-to-face banking services for residents and businesses across the community. Customers can visit on any day of the week for their everyday banking transactions, and if you have a specific or more complex enquiry for your bank, a community banker will be there to help on the day they’re in the hub.”

Mr Stuart said: “Since the closure of Lloyds was announced in 2023, it’s been a race against the clock to make sure Withernsea didn’t lose banking services. We’ve all been working hard on this – from your local councillors Lyn Healing and Sean McMaster, everyone at Cash Access UK, Jayne Nendick for offering the use of Shores while a permanent home was found and, most of all, Andrew Phipson and Tina Wilkinson at the banking hub itself. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to secure access to cash in Withernsea.”
