Hunslet head coach Dean Muir has picked out two key qualities in Hull FC youngster Ryan Westerman – qualities he hopes the teenager will bring to the Championship club on loan this season.
The 19-year-old is set to make the third senior appearance of his young career this weekend, with Hunslet facing last year’s League 1 champions Oldham.
Westerman, meanwhile, returned from a three-month ankle injury last week, playing for Hull’s reserves side. He last featured for the senior side against York Acorn in the Challenge Cup back in February, kicking eight goals in the tie.
But it’s first-team action that he needs once more, and that’s what he is expected to get at the Leeds-based club, with Muir following the centre’s rehab journey before making the move to acquire the player on loan – as revealed by Hull boss John Cartwright on Tuesday.
“Ryan is someone we have been following closely,” he said. “We have been light in the outside backs, and he is the right fit for us. He has a good yardage carry and is also a left-foot kick option. He works hard, and we can’t wait to get working with him.”
Westerman made his Hull debut against Catalans in the final game of last season. He is one of many young players highly rated at the club and will be at Hunslet for a minimum of two weeks. Hull then have the option to recall the player, who could remain on loan for the rest of the season.
Elsewhere, Hugo Salabio remains on loan at Super League club Castleford Tigers, while Zach Jebson, who has featured on loan at League 1 outfit Goole Vikings, played for the Black and Whites’ reserve side last weekend. Will Gardiner and Brad Fash both played on dual reg at Doncaster.
