I recently tried a Chinese takeaway that has been ticking all the boxes in east Hull.
Peking Star in Marleet Lane, east Hull, is not a takeaway I’d heard of before but, when I looked it up, it had favourable reviews with customers describing the food as “beautiful” and “gorgeous”.
The business was only inspected in January and got the maximum hygiene rating of five stars, which is always a reassuring sign. I found the Peking Star website easy to navigate and it was simple to place and order and pay by card.
I picked two mains, a King prawn Thai red curry and a satay, plus boiled rice and a portion of fried noodles with bean sprouts. There was also a generous bag of prawn crackers and a couple of fortune cookies thrown in as a bonus. For under £20 it was great.
To my surprise, I was advised to collect in just 20 minutes, which seemed speedy for a busy Saturday night (for delivery, times were around one hour). When I turned up, the food was ready and steaming hot.
When I took the food home and opened the boxes, I was greeted by tantalising smells and could hardly wait to pile it on the plates. The Thai red curry was sweet and aromatic and had a good helping of prawns.
The satay had a nice flavour with a kick to it, as well as that lovely texture from the peanuts in the sauce. Both main dishes had nicely cooked vegetables within the sauce; these were chiefly green peppers, bamboo shoots, carrot, and onion.
Perhaps my favourite part was the noodles, they were tasty and greasy in the best possible way. Every bite had a mouthful of crunchy bean sprouts and the combination of flavours and textures left me wanting more.
I thought the inclusion of fortune cookies and prawn crackers was a nice touch – if you spend more money than I did, you can also get a bag of spring rolls thrown in.
Despite the big portions, it wasn’t possible to save any leftovers because the food was too delicious to resist multiple helpings. I ended up very full and very happy.
If you are based down that way, I’d recommend giving Peking Star a try.
