Ruben Selles has emerged as a new contender for the vacant Huddersfield Town managerial job. That is according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon, who claims the former Hull City boss has opened talks with the League One club.

The Spaniard was sacked by the Tigers last week, just six months after replacing Tim Walter at the helm. Selles steered the Tigers to Championship survival, securing safety with a draw at Portsmouth on the final day of the regular season.

Owner Acun Ilicali said he could not be “satisfied” at only just avoiding the drop. On Selles’ dismissal, he told BBC Humberside: “Ruben is a fantastic guy and a good coach but at the end of the day we have to be a team together and trust each other and if we don’t have the full trust then I don’t think it can last,” he said.

“We’re happy we stayed in the league but I’m not happy about the general picture. I don’t make this kind of decision by myself. We have a football team and everyone was in agreement and on the same page.”

Huddersfield have been without a permanent boss since dispensing with Michael Duff’s services in the middle of March. Town placed academy manager Jon Worthington in caretaker charge of first team affairs but they finished the campaign with a whimper, losing eight out of their final 10 matches to finish 10th in the table.

Kevin Nagle, the Huddersfield owner, has vowed to turnaround their fortunes. He said: “No words I can say will make you or me feel better about this season. All I can say is this – you will have my time, my passion, and my money this offseason, as we will work day and night to get this right.

“In all my years of being in team ownership, across ALL sports, I have never had one collapse like this midseason. That is a disease we will be eradicating this offseason, amongst other things. It starts with leadership and culture.

“And if that rubs some wrong within the building, those are the ones that don’t need to be here next year. And if you think I’m passing blame, I’m not. It starts and ends with ME. And I have to do better, and I WILL do better.

“I want to thank you, the supporters, along with our amazing club staff for putting up with this season as best you can. You all deserve far, FAR better. In the coming weeks, you will see actions befitting these words. Time to go to work.”
