A pornography addict who violently raped a woman and was later condemned by her as “disgusting” and “the worst of the worst” has been jailed.
Jamie Ackroyd confessed to being “hooked on porn” and he admitted: “It was all I thought about. It was all about sex,” Hull Crown Court heard.
Ackroyd, 35, formerly of Bridlington, denied rape but he was convicted by a jury after a trial following four hours and 32 minutes of deliberations.
He was cleared of sexual assault and assault by penetration. At an earlier hearing in June last year, Ackroyd admitted separate offences of sexual assault and assault by penetration on the woman.
Stephen Robinson, prosecuting, said that Ackroyd told police during interview that he “would never dream of doing” the things that had been alleged against him. “I know when someone says ‘No’, it means ‘No’,” he said.
The police told him: “She told you to stop and you just carried on.” Ackroyd replied: “No.” He claimed: “Obviously, it was consensual. She just made a threat to call the police but I took it with a pinch of salt.”
The police told him: “She said that she definitely said ‘No’ but you continued to have sex with her, obviously without her consenting to it.”
Ackroyd replied: “No, no. I have been quite open with you. It’s never happened. It’s part of an immature game that I am not willing to play any more.” He told police: “I had a pornography addiction and I did struggle with that. I ain’t proud of things that I have done.”
He claimed that his addiction to pornography made him see the woman as a “sexual object” but he denied that he ever wanted to hurt her. “I was too obsessed with myself and everything I could get for myself,” he said. “I was hooked on porn. It was all I thought about. It was all about sex. I was addicted.” The woman said that Ackroyd was “disgusting” and branded him “the worst of the worst”.
During Ackroyd’s evidence in court, defence barrister Frances Pencheon asked him: “Did you have sex with her after she said ‘No’?” Ackroyd replied: “No.” Miss Pencheon asked him: “Did you try to get her to change her mind if she said she didn’t want to have sex?” Ackroyd replied: “No.”

Miss Pencheon, mitigating, said: “He acknowledges that he behaved appallingly and he is genuinely remorseful. He had an unhealthy relationship with pornography.
“It was an addiction. He now regards himself as no longer addicted.”
Ackroyd had limited previous convictions for offences when he was, at the time, young and emotionally immature.
Ackroyd, recently of Filey, was jailed for 12 years and was given an indefinite restraining order.
Recorder Alistair MacDonald KC said: “The only possible sentence is a custodial sentence of some length.” Ackroyd was on bail during the trial but he had been remanded in custody on April 11 to await sentence after being convicted by the jury.
