Volunteers are being sought to drive community minibuses and cars in East Yorkshire.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council said community transport groups provided a vital service in the East Riding, helping older people and those with disabilities to travel to essential medical appointments, shopping, or go for days out.

The authority said a recruitment event for anyone interested was being held from from 10:00 GMT in the South Shore Car Park, Bridlington, on 21 November.

Anyone interested would also be able to chat to teams from Holderness Area Rural Transport (HART) and Bridlington Local Community Lift (BLCL)

HART is looking for more volunteer minibus drivers for its services in the Holderness area, and one of its minibuses will be available at the recruitment event for supervised test drives.

Meanwhile, BLCL is looking for volunteers with their own cars to give people lifts to appointments.

Councillor Nick Coultish, the council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure, tourism and planning, said: “Community transport volunteers can make a huge difference to local residents who might not be able to get to appointments or shopping under their own steam.”

He added: “I would encourage anyone interested to go along to this recruitment event, see what it’s about and see how they could help.”
