Scenes of “horrific” and “horrendous” violence suddenly erupted at a restaurant during a frightening confrontation that could easily have “escalated massively” and left someone seriously injured.

A hot-headed father repeatedly punched another man inside the restaurant during a “vicious and brutal attack” and, minutes later, his son came running in from outside and “brandished” a fearsome machete, Hull Crown Court heard.

Grzegorz Wosiak, 42, of Endymion Street, off James Reckitt Avenue, east Hull, admitted an offence of wounding. His son, Orian Wosiak, 21, also of Endymion Street, admitted possessing a blade on December 11.

Benjamin Donnell, prosecuting, said that trouble erupted at a restaurant in Beverley Road, Hull, shortly after 6pm and problems escalated when Grzegorz Wosiak punched another man three or four times as well as picking up a bottle of alcohol and throwing it towards the man’s head. It did not seem to have hit the man’s head and it smashed on a wall behind him.

At the same time, Orian Wosiak was outside the restaurant and he ran inside. “He had a machete in his jogging bottoms,” said Mr Donnell. “He brandished it. Although a number of punches were delivered, it was a short-lived assault.”

Off-duty police officers were dining inside the restaurant at the time and they alerted other police. The man was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary after suffering multiple cuts to the back of his head and another to his left ear.

The larger cuts were about 1cm long and they were glued, with a bandage being put on. Advice was given about a head injury and he was discharged.

Charlie Austin-Groome, mitigating, said that Grzegorz Wosiak had a previous conviction for assault and he had been jailed for that. He had been given a taste of custody by being remanded in custody until the day of the court hearing. He pleaded guilty and he would be working with the probation service until March next year.

Ayman Khokhar, representing Orian Wosiak, said that the son originally denied the offence but indicated in January that he would be changing his plea to guilty. He had convictions for two previous offences, including possessing cannabis.

Judge John Thackray KC said that the violent scenes in the restaurant were “horrific” and Grzegorz Wosiak had launched a “vicious and brutal attack” on the other man. “It’s horrendous multiple blows by you and then you threw a bottle towards his head,” said Judge Thackray.

“Only good fortune meant that it missed, hitting a wall behind him.”

Orian Wosiak came running into the restaurant armed with a machete and brandished it. “It was only the persistence and determination of others to calm you down that prevented this escalating massively,” said Judge Thackray.

“These courts are well familiar with what happens when people arm themselves with knives and, before you know it, someone has a serious or fatal injury.”

Grzegorz Wosiak, who was in custody, was given a 16-month suspended prison sentence and 20 days’ rehabilitation. Orian Wosiak, who was on bail, was given a 10-month suspended sentence, 100 hours’ unpaid work and 20 days’ rehabilitation. A five-year restraining order was made.

“If you breach these orders or commit offences, you will come back before the courtand you will start with those prison sentences,” said Judge Thackray.
