Ted Jackson is determined to seize his opportunity and make a name for himself on his biggest stage yet when he returns to action Friday night. The 23-year-old from North Cave steps out in just his fourth professional fight when taking on Kristaps Zulgis at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium, as part of the DAZN televised show headed by Terri Harper and Maxi Hughes.
For Jackson, who will be in his first six round contest after three four round victories, it is a great chance to push himself in front of a large audience and announce himself on the domestic middleweight scene.
A three-time national amateur champion, including an elite senior victory, the ex-St Paul’s boxer had a reputation to fear as an amateur and prospective Olympian, now he’s set about carving a similar one in the pro’ game.
“I always set out looking to impress, no matter what the fight,” says Jackson. “I’m on the big stage in this fight, but any fight I want to be impressive. This is a huge platform for me to showcase myself to a wider audience.
“I’ve not known anything else than boxing. I had an Olympic dream but my age was a factor. Winning amateur titles was never the dream though, it was being a professional champion and that’s where I am focussed now.”
Jackson has teamed up with former Hull boxer Connor Coghill, who was forced to retire in October 2023 after a bleed on the brain during a defeat to Hopey Price. Coghill has since launched his BoxClub gym, with a growing stable that also includes Lewis Sylvester.
“Connor is like a big brother to me. He’s like a little brother sometimes too, when he’s annoying me,” says Jackson with a smile. “I know he wants what’s best for me inside and outside the ring. He looks after me and the relationship is working really well.
“I’ve got a good circle around me who keep me level headed and focussed. I’m in a good place and hopefully can make a real statement Friday night.”
