Hull City remain without a manager almost a week on from the sacking of Ruben Selles and nearly three weeks after the Championship season finished with a final day salvage act.

Since then, City fans have been eagerly awaiting news on who will be the man charged with improving their fortunes next season and ensuring the Tigers do not have another campaign of struggle.

Numerous names have been linked, some with more foundation than others. One of the managers City are understood to have looked at is Gary O’Neil, though the former Wolves boss is not thought to be in the running.

His name was by far and away the leading candidate according to a poll of around 1,500 Tigers supporters on the Hull Live website.

Twenty-seven per cent of those who cast their vote backed O’Neil, who impressed at Molineux last season before struggling this term and losing his job in December following a damaging home loss to Ipswich Town.

Ex-City defender and current Tottenham Hotspur assistant boss, Ryan Mason was next in line with 16 per cent closely followed by Alex Neil.

The Scotsman was interviewed before Selles was appointed and then took the Millwall job, coming close to guiding the Lions into the play-offs after a terrific second half of the season. Russell Martin was the fourth choice with 11 per cent, followed by Rob Edwards with nine, and both Miron Muslic and Tom Cleverley with eight.

Owner Acun Ilicali continues to hold talks with potential new candidates and hopes to make an appointment in the near future.
