Hull City are eyeing a move for former Sheffield United striker Oliver McBurnie as the Tigers look to bolster the Championship’s most impotent forward line.

City scored just 44 goals last season, which was the lowest in the Championship, and the Tigers’ biggest task this summer is to bring in players capable of firing the goals to get the club further up the table.

The Scotland international has been playing out in Spain with Las Palmas since leaving Bramall Lane 12 months ago, but is looking at making a return to England after scoring just three times and notching up six assists in 33 La Liga appearances.

Las Palmas, who signed City target Scott McKenna last summer along with McBurnie following his exit from the Steel City, were relegated last weekend before their 1-0 home defeat to Leganes on Sunday.

City could give him that opportunity and a return to Yorkshire, with talks understood to be ongoing over a possible move as they look to exploit a relegation release clause in the 28-year-old’s three-year contract which enables him to leave on a free transfer.

Adding firepower will be key this summer for the club, whoever turns out to be the next manager after Ruben Selles was sacked last Thursday. Interviews are ongoing with owner Acun Ilicali keen to make an appointment sooner rather than later, but it’s unlikely any senior players will be signed until a new manager is appointed.

The 17-cap Tartan Army international has notched up 125 Championship appearances playing for the Blades and Swansea City, and has bagged 44 goals and eight assists in that time. He’s also played 96 times in the Premier League, scoring 13 goals. In 159 appearances for United following his £20m move from Swansea City in 2019, he netted 29 goals.
