Hull City have interviewed Michael Beale as part of their recruitment process to find a successor to Ruben Selles who was sacked last Thursday.
Beale has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq recently, having been employed as Steven Gerrard’s assistant out in the Saudi Pro League, and is now looking to get back into English football.
The 44-year-old was spoken to on Monday, as reported by Hull Live, and is thought to have impressed, but owner Acun Ilicali is not believed to be at the stage of offering him the job vacated by Selles and is still assessing potential options.
City still have a shortlist of potential candidates and Beale’s interview was part of the process of sounding out those the club believe could take over at the MKM Stadium.
A flurry of potential new recruits have been spoken to in the days since Selles’ exit was confirmed, and it’s expected that this will continue in the coming days, as Ilicali seeks out the candidate he believes can spark an upturn in fortunes.
After spending a lengthy spell at Rangers as Gerrard’s assistant, Beale took charge at QPR and started brightly in West London, but things changed when he was offered the Wolves job. Despite turning that down, he left for the Ibrox top job shortly after that much to the frustration of R’s supporters.
His return to Glasgow lasted just over a year before he was sacked following a poor start to the season. In December 2023, Beale arrived at Sunderland after just 63 days and 12 games. During that poor start, his side were beaten 1-0 at home by Liam Rosenior’s City.
The Tigers know they must move quickly to replace Selles and avoid a repeat of what happened last season, when they were caught sleeping and struggled to recover, surviving relegation to League One on goal difference.
