An eight-year-old boy is back at home and “recovering well” after hours of surgery following a dog attack.
Weston Kiesler underwent hours of reconstructive surgery for injuries to his face and arm, after the incident in Goole on Sunday, May 11. His mum, Vicky, said: “Weston was in a lot of pain when he first got back home but he’s getting a lot better, he’s recovering well.
“They were amazing at the hospital. He went to Leeds General Infirmary as they are more specialist in paediatric trauma.
“He came home on Monday, they were happy with him after his surgery and they discharged him. We need to keep giving him antibiotics and regular pain relief.
“He has dissolvable stitches in his face that should come out in ten to 14 days. He has a pot on his right arm, which was broken, and the wire in his arm will need to be removed but we’ve not told him about having to have that done yet.”
Weston is one of five children to Vicky and her husband Luke, with his siblings, aged two to 19, all being “a bit scared” about what happened to their brother. “They’d never seen anything like it before,” said Vicky.
“Both of my daughters got really upset seeing his face. It hit my 14-year-old particularly hard, she feels really sorry for Weston.”
Vicky said: “The local community have been really good, doing fundraising and a lot of people have popped in and given him cards and little gifts and chocolates.” Weston had to be reassured about going outside again, his mum said.
“We have two dogs ourselves, a little teacup terrier and a Staffordshire bull terrier. Weston was a little bit wary of the bigger dog, in case it bounced into him, I think, but he’s getting there.”
Vicky said Weston had suffered multiple lacerations to his face and that his bottom lip was “hanging off” after the incident. She said that he was having regular checks on his injuries in case of infection.
“I think I was in shock at the time,” she said. “I was on autopilot, it was just about getting him to hospital. When he went into surgery and I had the time to reflect – it was quite a few hours – I thought it was bad but that it could have been so much worse.”
Humberside Police are investigating the incident, which happened in Morley Street, Goole, at around 9.55am on Sunday, May 11. A 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being a person in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog that caused injury and he has since been released on conditional bail.
The force said the dog they suspect to be involved in the incident is believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier and that it has been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
