Hull FC’s first-team had some welcome time off over the weekend – with Super League pausing for the Challenge Cup semi-finals. However, the reserves played their fifth game of the year, with Callum Kemp and Lloyd Kemp also in representative action.
Here’s the latest notebook.
Reserves win clash with four red cards issued
Hull FC trialist Charlie Robson scored two tries before receiving one of four red cards in Friday’s reserve game against Salford Red Devils. Two players from each side were shown red after a scuffle broke out in the game – with Cobie Wainhouse also sent off. Two Salford players also received their marching orders after plenty of pushing and shoving between the two sides.
Meanwhile, Robson, who has a rugby union background and played for Coventry in the sport’s second tier last season, lined up on the wing for the Black and Whites, crossing over for a brace – his first a 40-metre dash to the line and his second a firm finish after cutting back inside and evading a handful of tackle attempts.
The 23-year-old’s efforts were two of twelve during the 60-6 victory, with Hull converting just half of their tries. Elsewhere, Joe Ward, Lennon Clark, and Will Kirby all scored try braces. Also crossing over were Joe Thompson, Logan Moy, Jack Charles, and Elliot Middlemas. Charles, back in Hull colours after three games on dual reg at Doncaster, landed six goals.
Hull led 26-0 at the break and also had to serve ten minutes of the first half with 12 men, as Yusuf Aydin was sin-binned. The prop started the game after only featuring for one short stint at the Magic Weekend. He was yellow carded after accidentally catching a defender with his elbow in the tackle.
Also in action was Sam Eseh, who didn’t feature in the second half at Magic. The on-loan middle got some decent minutes under his belt before Friday’s Super League clash against Leeds Rhinos at Headingley. Will Hutchinson also played at hooker while Denive Balmforth lined up in the back row. Meanwhile, the scuffle that saw four red cards broke out after Balmforth was tackled off the ball.
Hull Starting XIII: Logan Moy; Charlie Robson, Lennon Clark, Ben Johnson, Joe Ward; Jack Charles, Joe Thompson; Sam Eseh, Will Hutchinson, Cobie Wainhouse; Will Kirby, Denive Balmforth; Yusuf Aydin. Interchanges: Owen Haldenby, Elliot Middlemas, Callum Smith, Will Wilson
Hull Tries: Ward 2, Clark 2, Thompson, Kirby 2, Moy, Charles, Robson 2, Middlemas. Goals: Charles 6/12
Kemp twins star in Yorkshire win
Yorkshire won the first Academy Origin game against Lancashire with a thumping 42-10 victory at Castleford’s Wheldon Road on Saturday afternoon. Both Callum Kemp and Lloyd Kemp featured, with Callum in the halves and Lloyd at full-back, who crossed over during the win.
Both players have been playing for Hull’s academy and reserves this season, with Lloyd also making a try-scoring debut for the first-team in the Challenge Cup tie against York Acorn back in February.
Huge following set for Headingley
Hull FC are set to be backed by a huge following at Leeds Rhinos at Headingley on Friday night. The Black and Whites have filled over 20 coaches for the clash, with well over 1,000 tickets sold. The official club coaches have once again been subsidised by owners Andrew Thirkill and David Hood, with Hull going up against Leeds for the first time this year.
Jebson plays on loan
Zach Jebson played his second game for Goole Vikings over the weekend. The forward has moved to the League 1 outfit on loan for the rest of the 2025 season, starting the game in the back row position. Unfortunately, it was another defeat for the Vikings, who were beaten 42-24 by Whitehaven up in Cumbria.
